Remember folks, just because nobody was injured, that does not mean a violation did not occur. If there was or is an "exposure", OSHA can, and will impose civil penalties/fines. In some severe cases, managers and supervisors can be charged with manslaughter in involuntary manslaughter. Get quality training for your workforce. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR ANNOUNCES FINAL RULE UPDATING THE HAZARD COMMUNICATION STANDARD TO BETTER PROTECT WORKERS, FIRST RESPONDERS Revisions improve quality of information on labels and safety data sheets and takes effect July 19, 2024 The Department of Labor announced a final rule from its Occupational Safety and Health Administration that will update the current Hazard Communication Standard to better protect workers by improving the amount and quality of information on labels and safety data sheets and allow workers and first responders to react more quickly in an emergency. The updates take effect on July 19, 2024. Aligned with the seventh revision of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, the updated standard will require labels on small packaging to be more comprehensive and readable and makes changes to help ensure trade secrets no longer prevent workers and first responders from receiving critical hazard information on safety data sheets. Looks like it’s time for that annual review of your hazard communication program and operational practices. Make it a great holiday weeekend!

🚧 Understanding Fall Protection: Arrest vs. Restraint Systems 🚧 In workplace safety, particularly in industries where working at heights is commonplace, understanding the distinction between Fall Arrest Systems and Fall Restraint Systems is not just important—it's potentially life-saving. What’s the Difference? Fall Arrest Systems are designed to stop a fall that's already occurring. They’re your safety net, featuring components like body harnesses, lanyards, anchor points, and deceleration devices that activate in the event of a fall, safely stopping the worker before they hit the ground. Fall Restraint Systems, on the other hand, prevent falls from happening. These systems involve tying a worker to a secure anchor point with equipment such as a tether or body belt that physically prevents them from reaching a point where they could fall. Why Does It Matter? The key to choosing between a fall arrest and fall restraint system lies in understanding the specific task and environment: - Fall Restraint is ideal where the risk can be completely controlled, and the worker can be prevented from reaching the fall hazard. - Fall Arrest is necessary where exposure to a fall cannot be prevented, making it crucial to have a system that can safely stop a fall after it begins. Both systems are critical in protecting workers, but the application of each depends on a thorough risk assessment and understanding of the environment. Is your organization properly recording MSD cases? On May 2, 2024, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued updated “Enforcement Guidance Under OSHA’s Recordkeeping Regulation When First Aid, Active Release Techniques (ART), and Exercise/Stretching Are Used To Treat Musculoskeletal Injuries and Illnesses.” “Repeated application of first aid to the same employee presenting the same concerns, and an employer not referring the employee to make a medical consultation available can be grounds for a citation.” Using ART to treat a work-related issue is recordable if the application results in job transfer, restricted work, or days away. Restriction of any activity that occurs at least once per week makes something recordable. Therapeutic exercise is considered medical treatment, and recordable, when it is designed and administered to treat a particular work-related injury/illness as part of a treatment plan and ends once the treatment objectives are met. If an employee is given a home exercise program to treat a work-related injury, this constitutes medical treatment and is recordable. If stretching exercises were modified or changed to specifically address an employee’s injury or illness, the case is likely OSHA recordable. As was stated by OSHA on January 25, 2010, “pain or muscle soreness would conclusively determine that an abnormal condition exists.” If an employee reports pain or other symptoms affecting the muscles, nerves, tendons, etc., the incident must be evaluated for work-relatedness, and, if determined to be work-related, must be evaluated to determine its recordability. How is your organization managing work-related pain and discomfort? Is every employee report being investigated? Whenever a work-related injury or illness occurs, an employer is required to assess and mitigate the “recognized hazard” causing the issue.  How does your organization do this? #ergonomics #OSHA #recordability #workerscompensation #citations

I'm speaking at the NSC Spring Conference. The session is entitled "You’ve Been Doing Safety Metrics All Wrong!" Traditional safety metrics are strong on lagging metrics and struggle with leading indicators. At best, they provide a backward-looking view of performance and make a feeble attempt to achieve a strategic “peek” into the future. These methods are fine, but they’ll hardly advance performance. OSHA calls this a "user seal check". Most users know this is how we do a negative pressure test to check the "face to facepiece seal." Did you know this also checks the seal on the EXHALATION valve? If you ask someone which valves are more important on an APR most will reply without thinking "inhalation valves." This is not so. If the inhalation valves malfunction, your exhalation goes back into your filters or cartridges. While this is not favorable, at least you are still getting filtration. If your exhalation valve malfunctions, contaminants are going RIGHT UP YOUR SNOOT. Its not just about the mask seal folks. Its about that exhalation valve too! (Yeah, and that positive pressure check is important too, because it checks those inhalation valves.)
