‼️👍Maybe the magic of the outdoor industry and its benefits are contagious - why else would the editors of The New York Times enable accomplished reporter and colleague John Branch to devote more than two full pages to why high end outdoor magazines are thriving in print in today’s Sunday print issue. Yes, you heard correctly- over two full pages. 🏕️It’s probably no coincidence that Outdoor Industry Association reported last week that we are seeing record participation growing to 4.1% to a record 175.8 million participants, 57.3% of all Americans aged six and older. and that for the first time ever, more than half of American women are participating in outdoor recreation: female participation reached 51.9% in 2023, up from 50% in 2022. 🆕🆕🆕Perhaps it’s also why Outdoor Retailer, the leading North American trade show and premier business event for the outdoor community, ushered in renewed energy and the next generation of companies reflecting the changing profile of the consumer (who is going outdoors for fun not to set a record.) 📱Stephen Casimiro, a dear friend and founder and publisher of Adventure Journal, says, “We’re all exhausted from our screens. We want something to savor. The screen experience is so reductionist. It just flattens the world.” 📖 Ori Magazine founder Kade Krichko called it the “slow read movement.” 🗻Mike Rogge, founder of Mountain Gazette shared, “We went too far in the digital realm and now we’re pulling it back.” ⛰️Michael Levy. who brought back Summit Journal, said, “There’s a lot of really good stuff in the outside ecosystem but it gets drowned out by the noise.” 🏄🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️Thembi Hanify and Mariah of Emocean Magazine said, “There’s this interesting cycle- big print outlets dying, but in conjunction with that, outdoor sports are diversifying. I have mixed emotions as we wrap up our time and work on the Mullin Automotive Museum and sunset it’s social channels and site now that museum has closed in the wake of Peter Mullin’s death. I’m sad about the closing of what was unquestionably one of the great automotive museums and art deco collections in the world; but I’m also grateful for the time, lessons, experiences and tutelage Peter gave me over the past 12 years. With that in mind, I thought I’d share three lessons I learned from a business titan who showed an interest in a PR guy from the Valley. 1. Nothing is impossible with the right plan. - Peter was a master at this. From building the largest executive benefits company in America to getting the Petersen Museum through a $100M remodel on budget and on time, to building a restaurant on the side of a cliff in Big Sur out of centuries old massive redwood barrels, he would pick the best vendors, hold weekly calls, hold people accountable and get things done through firm leadership offset by a willingness to learn and listen. 2. Stress Test New Relationships - Peter rejoined the Petersen Museum board and was thinking of engaging us for his own museum, he asked for a meeting, and REALLY turned the screws on me. He wanted to know how, what and why we charged what we charged, what we’d do to earn it, and where there was room to negotiate. I held my ground and he later told me he respected that, it wasn’t about the money - he wanted to test my mettle. For more than a decade, he never mentioned money again. 3. Surround yourself with good people, and stick with them. - Once he found someone he trusted, they were IN. Peter’s assistant Susan Bendrick is one of the smartest, calmest and most organized human beings I’ve ever met and she worked by his side for decades. Same with his head of finance Anne Alario. Ulf Henriksson of The Scenic Route (who Peter used on all of his design projects) was in that club too. It was hard to earn the trust, but once you were in you were part of the team. *Bonus 4th lesson - history matters, learn from it. - Years ago, the Mullin was opening an exhibit on the Belle Epoque era; the vehicles were mostly carriages. I didn’t get the point, and asked Peter. He explained that at the start of the period, cities were filled with horse drawn carriages and by the teens they were replaced with motor cars. But the middle period was what he was fascinated with, when motor car owners had to hire a person to walk in front of their vehicle waving a red flag so it wouldn’t scare the horses. He explained “That was a transition from one era to the next, and I find it interesting to study how society handled that transition. We’re in one of those moments right now.” He’s right. I’ll never forget that. It was an honor and a privilege to work for the man that Terry L Karges Sr calls “The Big Sir from Big Sur,” and I appreciate the faith he put in my team and the time he gave us.

These will help you "sniff out" the voters you want to turnout to the polls.  Voter ID calls are absolutely necessary to any successful campaign. Campaigns who use Voter ID calls to find out what people care about are better able to target direct mail and digital media. If you have someone ID’d by issue, you can tie their primary issues to their first and second candidate choice. If you are the second choice of an individual and you know what issues they care about, now you have something to work with. If you want to win your race, you should paws-atively call CHQ.
