How far into the future does your institution plan? There is general consensus that these days, a strategic plan, whether developed for an institution of higher education or another organization, should cover 3-5 years. Following the volatility and uncertainty of recent COVID years, some institutions began leaning towards a 3-year plan, thinking it provided an opportunity to pivot if circumstances unexpectedly changed. Other institutions have stayed the course with planning for the next 5 years. What do you see as the pros and cons of a shorter versus a longer plan?

Extending in-state tuition to students from Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of education equity. By providing these students with the same tuition benefits as in-state residents, we are creating a more inclusive and accessible educational landscape. IES invites applications for two new grant programs for FY 2025 through NCER’s Accelerate, Transform, Scale (ATS) Initiative:   ⚙️ Through the Research Networks Focused on Critical Problems of Education Policy and Practice Grants Program, NCER invites applications for an ATS Initiative Hub. The Hub will serve as a resource center for applicants and grantees in ATS Initiative programs, support the establishment of new ATS Initiative programs, and provide high level support to IES in coordinating existing programs that fall under the ATS Initiative.    🌱 Through the From Seedlings to Scale (S2S) program, IES will invest in innovative products, policies, and processes within an identified focus area through three phases of increasing funding and time duration to support ideas as they grow from seedlings to scalable solutions. For FY2025, IES invites bold thinkers to apply for Phase One projects focused on Seamless Personalized Education Experiences Delivered at Scale (SPEED at Scale).   Applications for both programs are due August 15, 2024. Letters of Intent may be submitted by July 11, 2024. For more information about these research opportunities and the application process, visit the link below.

Enrollment in higher ed can be challenging, especially for schools lacking strong online options. Those with extensive digital resources tend to thrive. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to tackle "brain drain" in communities and regions. Dr. Marina Aminy, from California Virtual Campus, discussed on the Parchment podcast how course sharing is changing the game. Students traditionally faced hurdles accessing key courses. Dr. Aminy highlighted how California's Community College system is leading the charge. With 116 colleges working together, students now access over 350,000 courses annually, vastly improving their educational opportunities. Here at Parchment, we partner with state systems and smaller groups to streamline cross-registration and expand non-degree offerings through our Course Sharing platform. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and American Council on Education have partnered to propose two methodologies for achieving a universal measurement of socioeconomic mobility across all American Higher Education Institutions. The importance of accurate data reporting cannot be overstated, as socioeconomic mobility, workforce development, performance-based funding, and student debt discussions revolve around one central concern: student performance and meaningful outcomes. How we staff our schools is the single most important thing we do—it’s time to move beyond one teacher-one classroom designs—our teachers and learners deserve better. Come see us! The Next Education Workforce hosted 16 total site visits in the Academic Years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. · Registrants: There were 877 attendees (244 in AY22-23, 633 in AY23-24) for the site visits, including 33 repeat attendees. · Geographical Reach: Attendees represent 35 states, 95 organizations, 69 school systems, and 3 countriesoutside of the United States: Ireland, Netherlands, and South Africa. · Repeat Engagement: 22 of 69 (32%) of participating school systems attended multiple site visits. · Organization Types: ) Participating organizations were public, charter, independent school leaders; foundations, NGO’s; U.S. Department of Education; State departments of education; and others interested in school transformation. https://lnkd.in/gyeWeuVX

Why is NCSER focused on systems research in FY25? Two reasons. First, we are prioritizing proposals that were rated as Outstanding or Excellent through peer review in FY24 (but which we could not fund in FY24 due to limited funding). Second, if we need to limit our focus, systems-level research is well worthy of our collective attention, as I argue in the attached blog.
