HOLD 'EM or FOLD 'EM. That is the question on many dealers' minds each and every day regarding used inventory management. The next two months will tell us a lot about how the year will finish but for now, the price of buying inventory is outpacing the retail price to sell that inventory. We can expect, if the historical pattern continues, we will see a shift in the retail price in the next few weeks giving us some relief. Until then, with margin compression, holding for gross will need to be on hold as we are back in the velocity market, for all geological colors. Too much sales messaging is telling dealers what they already know. Interest rates are high, inventories are growing, days supply is increasing. It's not productive and it doesn't create friction. Here's a better way... Why not create messaging around what dealers don't know? Because it requires you as knowing the dealers business better than they do. I've learned over the years how you sell Is more important than what you sell. If you want dealers to listen to your sales messaging, It helps to create productive friction. Productive friction pushes your prospects to think differently. It questions assumptions and conventional thinking. The best seller do this naturally. But implementing it across your sales messaging is difficult, Because marketing types are worried it will damage the relationship. So they continually tell dealers what they already know. Telling dealers what they already know has less value, Than sharing insights they don't know.
