#TBT to when HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital received the Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades. Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year’s top-performing hospitals for patient safety. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals: - In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely) - Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely) - Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely) - Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely) Upon the recognition last March, HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ron Rasmussen said: “Maintaining a safe environment at HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital for our patients as well as our colleagues is an integral part of our hospital culture. A culture of safety is something we are proud to foster here every day, and I am proud of the commitment our doctors, nurses, and hospital professionals have made to a safe and healthy environment. Disruption in healthcare is a double-edged sword. It can fuel resistance to change and pose risks and uncertainty. In nursing, timely communication can often be a matter of life and death. The ability to deliver important information promptly and efficiently is essential for providing quality patient care. Just as the delayed message of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the enslaved African Americans in Texas had far-reaching consequences, delays in communication within healthcare settings can lead to adverse outcomes for patients. We can ensure that future generations of nurses are equipped to provide culturally competent care to an increasingly diverse patient population. Juneteenth embodies the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Nursing, as a profession dedicated to caring for individuals from all walks of life, must embrace these principles wholeheartedly. By recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth, nurses can reaffirm their commitment to providing equitable and inclusive care to patients of diverse backgrounds. We cannot erase and should not try to erase the dark chapters of slavery. We have bravely endured the legacy of inequality. We can and continue to learn from these painful experiences. We can acknowledging the hardships and injustices of the past, nurses can better understand the systemic barriers that have marginalized certain communities and work towards dismantling them.
