I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)

On the service provider side, traditional operators and telcos are looking for TV options to offer and entice or retain customers as they pivot away from traditional pay TV and prioritize broadband growth, where pairing entertainment can help maintain customer relationships for other services. In a recent column on StreamTV Insider, Parks Associates Director Eric Sorensen noted that “telcos are pursuing aggressive options with streaming in order to keep the pay TV business operating for as long as feasible.” Parks Associates research showed that as of Q1 2024 Charter’s Spectrum TV services are in 23% of internet homes, up yoy from its 19% market share in each 2022 and 2023. Sorensen wrote that service providers are adopting streaming bundles to lower operational expenses and to appeal to larger advertisers by enabling ad buying across multiple platforms. “Additionally, bundles help prevent churn of the subscriber completely departing,” wrote Sorensen. “Parks Associates anticipates we will continue to see the reemergence of a new kind bundle as a way for pay-TV providers to reengage and entice lost customers.” https://lnkd.in/gUbgPY8J

I had to read this line a few times.... "Audio is a key part of the daily lives of all Americans, and this is true for sports fans, as well. In fact, sports fans spend six hours and 26 minutes with audio content each day—that’s over two hours more than the average American spends listening to audio." On first read I was trying to figure out how anybody has 6 hours and 26 minutes a day to consume sports content. Then eventually I understood this to mean that sports fans spend 6 hours and 26 minutes with ANY audio content. Essentially, sports fans are listening to music as well and have other interests beyond sports. But, being a sports fan skews your appetite for more audio consumption up. There is big opportunity here. But, there is also a lot of competition. #podcasting #sports #audio #radio

As Paramount Global evaluates its strategy for all of its linear and streaming assets, multiple sources tell me that Pluto TV’s co-founder and current CEO of Paramount Streaming has been in discussions with the company about repurchasing it. These discussions started before the Skydance deal was announced, but I’m told no valuation has been placed on Pluto TV, and no official offer numbers have been exchanged. Interestingly, during the Paramount Global all-hands meeting on June 25th, employees say the company didn’t mention or include any reference to Pluto TV during the newly announced go-forward plan. Those who sat in smaller internal meetings also say the brand was absent from the discussions. Since the Skydance deal was announced, Skydance has featured Pluto TV as one of the six core pillars of the company on slide ten of its presentation. However, that doesn’t guarantee that Pluto TV, or any other content brand, will be part of the company going forward. During a call with investors after the Skydance deal was announced, Jeff Shell stated, “Current management is also talking about a couple of transactions that, if they get the right price, we’ll be supportive of.” So Paramount Global’s current management team can sell off assets and make deals they think will help the new management team as long as the new management team is consulted. I do think as an industry we over complicate things. At 43Twenty (shameless plug), we do a lot of work with great companies banging on great stuff in the streaming space. HOWEVER, when learning about a new client’s products and solutions, I’m often met with nifty buzzwords and jargon that completely flies over my head. And I ain’t no dummy. My approach now is “yeah (client), but why does it matter?” or “why should I care about _________?” Once we play this rigmarole a few times, I’m able to unearth the magic of our clients offerings in a way that real humans (aka non technical decision makers) can understand. Content ends up being compelling, impactful, and digestible….you might even consider it…wait for it…”thought leadership.” TLDR: when it comes to telling your brand’s narrative, be a 3 years old and ask “why” “why” “why”. After you do that a few times, you get to the thing that actually matters.

Very good insight! I agree, the landscape is shifting. Adapt or die. As a TV and movie production company we can align with the streaming platforms, and with half a dozen companies reach HALF of the entire world's population. By doing so we can also control our own destiny and costs. That is alluring. The media distribution marketplace will dramatically change in the next 36 months. Is there a place for cinema, theatres, streaming, and other alternative delivery methods to co-exist? Time will tell, we all adapt, we all evolve, that is the nature of business. Here is a prelude of things to come...

A common theme in the world of media over the past several years has been fragmentation. The number of advertising platforms that consumers are exposed to grows daily. Soft upfront market in line with ratings erosion and continued shift to digital/programmatic which is forecasted to be 4.9%-6% higher YOY. Will be interesting to see 1) Megatech + Media guide during earnings later this month 2) Ad forecasts pricing in future rate cuts and 3) Scattermarket competitiveness post election.
