While the California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) is still evaluating the investigative report prepared by Paige St. John and Alex Halperin, and released by the Los Angeles Times, we are deeply concerned by any data that suggests consumer safety is at risk. "California has some of the most stringent cannabis standards in the nation, designed to protect consumer safety and public health. However, the state’s continued failure to enforce against those who fail to comply — both inside and outside of the regulated market — has put the credibility of the entire adult-use market in peril, and now threatens the very consumers we aim to serve. "Due to overly burdensome regulations, high taxes, and a lack of oversight, the state has inadvertently created an environment where bad actors feel compelled to cut corners to compete and survive. This undermines the integrity of the market and compromises consumer safety. "It is the explicit role of a regulator to establish and enforce standards that protect consumer safety. Compliant industries rely on these standards to guide their practices. Given the known safety risks associated with certain pesticides, we would expect the state to implement the strongest protections with which we can effectively comply. "It is equally important to recognize that the findings from this report, based on a limited sample from a few brands, do not represent the industry as a whole. Many reputable operators work tirelessly to ensure the safety of their products, often far exceeding California’s regulatory standards while pioneering innovation across the industry. The actions of a few should not tarnish the efforts of those who are committed to compliance and consumer safety. "CCIA has been calling on policymakers for years to take action to address the thriving illicit market and non-compliant licensees that threaten market integrity and put consumers in harm’s way. Effective policymaking must be accompanied by rigorous compliance and enforcement. The New Hampshire Senate Judiciary Committee #amended and #approved a House-passed marijuana #legalization bill—the first time a proposal to legalize #cannabis has ever advanced in the chamber. A Pennsylvania Republican senator said the state is “getting close” to legalizing marijuana, but the job will only get done if House and Senate leaders sit down with Gov. Even in one of the most liberal cities like Washington, D.C., cannabis is misunderstood. Recent emergency legislation by D.C. Council and Mayor Bowser is taking the industry backwards by pushing ALL cannabis dispensaries - including federally legal hemp shops like ourselves - to medical. While we are pro-regulation and already abide by high standards of consumer safety with third-party lab tested products, accurate and informative labeling, and 21+ age restrictions, forcing all cannabis to be medical is not the way. We were visited by ABCA, DC Health, and several police officers, a couple of weeks ago, saying that we needed to apply to be a medical dispensary to be compliant. With 100% federally legal hemp-derived products, we are compliant in almost every state in the U.S. Our operations would be welcome in states much more conservative than D.C. like North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Nebraska. D.C. deserves a regulated cannabis market where consumers can feel safe about what they are purchasing and consuming. But they also deserve access to cannabis (like they do with alcohol) without having to register with the government as a cannabis consumer. Hemp is a way to do this. Is there such thing as too much cannabis? As more farms come online, we will all be dealing with a massive oversupply of cannabis. Bad actors will continue to “purchase” flower with no intentions of actually paying for it, or perhaps they plan to but then are faced with paying employees or paying said vendors. New Yorkers are buying 50% more cannabis than the national average, according to Weedmaps Q1 2024 data. The uptick comes as more dispensaries come online and potential stabilization in the state Office of Cannabis Management leadership.  According to Weedmaps data, 53% of New York orders via the platform are for cannabis flower – which is 5% higher than the national average of 48% – and 27% of orders are for edibles, 9% higher than the national average of 18%. Vape pen orders in New York through Weedmaps are 10% lower than the national average of 25%, at 15%.  Weedmaps also found that consumers aged 50+ are buying more flower, edibles, and fewer vape pens than consumers younger than 50.
