Some Indian consumer apps show blatant unethical #productmanagement . Case in point - Payment page of Zee5 - user is unlikely to do mental math & calculate how much is being taken out of his pocket. So the PM hardcodes 'Frequency' to 'As Presented' - because if the number is shown, the user will likely catch product fraud. Low effort and fishy :( The Start and End date is auto-populated to one year even if user opted for a 6 month plan. And user is NOT given option to edit date range. Again, low effort and cagy :( Finally, user is forced to opt-in for Autopay. No other CTA available :( I wonder if such desperation to squeeze and trap every penny out of each customer comes to compensate for a lack of quality product/content?

Payless vs Palessi Experiment. 👠 In 2018, Payless ShoeSource, a U.S. chain known for selling affordable footwear, conducted a marketing experiment. The experiment involved creating a fictitious luxury store called "Palessi" to see if consumers would perceive and value the same Payless shoes differently when presented in a luxury setting. Here’s how they did it! 🛍 Payless rented a store in a high-end mall in Los Angeles, California, and transformed it into a luxury boutique. The store was decorated with an elegant and modern design, reflecting the typical features of high-end boutiques. The name "Palessi" was carefully chosen to sound Italian and sophisticated, aligning with the expectations of a luxury brand. 💰 The Palessi store displayed a collection of shoes that were actually regular Payless products, typically priced between $20 and $40. However, these same shoes were relabeled with prices ranging from $200 to $600, creating the illusion that they were exclusive and high-quality items. 😎 To kick off the campaign, Payless organized an opening with select guests, including fashion influencers and trend experts, as well as regular luxury brand shoppers. These guests believed that Palessi was a new luxury brand breaking into the market. 🤑 Some buyers paid up to $645 for a pair of shoes that actually cost $19.99 at Payless. The reactions of the guests were recorded and shown in a series of promotional videos, where they were asked about their opinions on the shoes and the new brand. 👀 The Payless and Palessi experiment highlighted how the perception of value is highly subjective and can be manipulated through branding and presentation. The same shoes considered cheap in a Payless context were valued as luxury items in the Palessi context. ⚗ The experiment with the fictitious Palessi store was a marketing masterstroke that not only fooled consumers and fashion experts but also raised important questions about value perception and the power of branding. Through this experiment, Payless demonstrated that the perceived quality of a product can be as influential as its actual quality and that consumers can be easily swayed by the environment in which a product is presented. Google has rolled this out in India. There are scores of free and paid products doing the same thing btw. What happens to all of them ? As in products which help you to get insights from a document or a set of documents. How does one compete with a free product from a company like Google ? Doing any kind of 'horizontal AI offering' is no longer an option for any start-up.

Is Conversational Commerce going to be the next big thing in India. In the beginning there was E-Commerce followed by the era of Social Commerce followed by Quick Commerce. The question now is, is Conversational Commerce the next big thing? If we go by the article in this mornings edition of Mint, Whatsapp is serious about taking this to the next level. You see, the potential is clear in the numbers. - There are over 650 million users on social media and  - 450 million of them are not adept at e-commerce.  - 300 million of these are users who are comfortable making online payments via UPI. This right here presents the golden opportunity for conversions for businesses!  But how does one tap into an audience that's present on social media, not adept at using e-commerce sites and and prefers the ease of shopping on a chat platform. Simple. By bringing e-commerce to them.   Picture this - you can now go to the Jio Mart page on Whatsapp, access the product catalogue, navigate through multiple options, complete the purchase using a variety of payment methods and now are able to track delivery in real time status - all while you never left the Whatsapp interface even once. Meta's confidence that there is potential for adoption of chat based shopping is supported by its findings through a survey (conducted by Meta and Bain & Co.) that many users were reluctant to download apps due to concerns like limited phone storage. 40% of respondents revealed that they opted 'out' of purchases when prompted to install an app. Therefore business specific apps may struggle to expand beyond the delta of the top 50 million to 100 million customers. Around 70% of small and 60% of the large enterprises surveyed were planning to increase spending, primarily on in-chat payment tools, local language support, voice enabled in-chat ordering and interactive menus on conversational platform over the next 3-4 years. About 80% of the enterprises were planning to invest in generative AI within 1-2 years. Some of the early adopters of GenAI in this space like Zomato, Flipkart, Myntra and Plum have developed their own chat bots serving as personalized food assistants, shopping assistants, apparel discovery guides and insurance resolution tools. WhatsApp is now focusing all of its investments and strength into building a powerhouse platform by which businesses building over them can easily plug in and build experiences for enhancing customer service. For a country like India that loves WhatsApp and has adopted the UPI payments with open arms, the commerce marriage seems like the only natural extension.
