Brands shouldn't hide their likes count on Instagram. I have a story, actually. When I was Head of Social at Anastasia Beverly Hills, IG had just started exploring the idea of removing like counts. Being a part of the Alpha Advisory Board, our account was often subjected to testing new product features that were being (or, to some extent, considered being) rolled out. I'll never forget how Claudia, the President of the brand, absolutely LOST IT when she saw our likes taken away. "THEY CAN'T DO THAT!!" She exclaimed. "We need those!! People need to see that other people like our stuff." I remember being shocked that she felt so passionate about it. She was right then, and the same applies now. When I see a brand account hiding likes, my first thought is, "Well, that's shady." I just can't help but wonder what they're hiding. SMMs -- you should be proud of your work! And if engagement is low, set some OKRs and challenge yourself to beat and increase it MoM. I'm not sure if consumers think this way or not, but for me... I wish more DTC brands knew about it: package protection. Here's what I mean: ➝ Customer orders a pack of BRĒZ ➝ Package arrives, one of the cans is dented ➝ The other cans are fine, it's just one in a pack ➝ Customer submits a request to get a replacement ➝ SavedBy, for example, sends a full package replacement This is a win-win for everyone involved: More money in the merchant's pockets, because it's a full-price reorder (not a reimbursement or profit-draining reorder). More product in the customers' hands (who doesn't love getting more than what they paid for?). Finally, as a result, customers have more affinity for the product and the brand because of: 1. Increased exposure to the product (volume) 2. Experience with the easiness of claims (no hassle) Again, this might be one of the most underrated brand loyalty hacks (especially because it's free). Something to consider if you're on the fence about adding package protection.

I've talked to 100+ DTC brands in the past 30 days and many are making a critical mistake: They completely ignore their UGC content. You could miss out on thousands (if not millions) of views and customer touch points by not tracking UGC content related to your brand. This data can greatly inform your decision-making and community growth. Take it from Carmen West who started automatically tracking all content that tagged her brand or used their hashtag. Creators = the new TV👇 Can 100% confirm Curastory Ad Reads since our recent NMSDC certification has been receiving incremental media buying and planning spend this year that used to be reserved for local/national TV and radio spend categories. The big media agencies of record are going as far to begin creating entirely new spend categories called "creator media" for ad reads replacing the spots and dots, liners, and embeds from the TV and radio days. Called this trend in 2019 crazily quitting ESPN to build the first programmatic media buying platform for creator ad reads for long-form and short-form video. And y'all ESPN lovveedddd spots and dots for every Progressive ad embed at the top of SportsCenter. Beware❗ — do NOT make this all too common goal-setting mistake... Brand founders of scaling DTC brands often feel tempted to pivot their goals when they don't seem to be working out. But here's the kicker: they're going about it all wrong. Let me clarify: well-crafted, clearly defined goals are sacred and should not be changed frequently. But do you know what SHOULD be changed frequently? The strategies you implement to achieve those goals! If you find yourself struggling to gain traction on some of your growing brand's goals, don't make any changes to them right away... Is Costco part of a strong brand strategy? I braved Costco this week, and I saw a massive pack of Bachan's in an end of aisle display. Andrea's post about Bachan preparing for an acquisition made me think about a Howard Schulz interview that totally flipped how I think about Costco. 🤝 TLDR: Entering Costco propelled Starbuck’s brand-led growth. 🚗 Floating the idea of putting Starbucks in Costco, by Howard’s account, nearly caused a revolt within Starbucks. So Jim Sinegal, Schulz’s mentor and former Costco CEO, took Schulz to a Costco parking lot in Kirkland, Seattle on a Sunday Morning a pointed out the cars, telling him - these are your customers. IYKYK. Schulz was convinced, they launched in Costco, sold out and here’s the interesting part: 📈Starbucks were able to measure the increase in volume in stores on the east side of Seattle as a direct result of the proximity to the Costco. Buying the beans introduced thousands of beverage customers (Sbux language for in-store customers) to Costco through the beans. 📣 The strategy of finding little billboards for Starbucks all over the place - Costco, United Airlines, Target - gave Starbucks exposure in places where people weren’t used to good coffee, built their brand without spending a SINGLE marketing dollar. Pretty clever stuff. Love the brand or hate the brand today, this is sophisticated brand building. Whaddya reckon? Is Costco a sales channel, a brand building channel, or both?

Here's an example of why follower count should not matter... As a micro-influencer (30,000 followers) in the motherhood space, I recently partnered with a pediatrics company. I posted ✨ONE✨ Instagram story frame for them and generated - 158 clicks 23 signups (~15% conversion rate - from a singular static image) This is not a brag. This is a plead for brands to focus on influencer ALIGNMENT over vanity metrics. #influencermarketing #influencers #influencerROI

Hiring an agency is a crapshoot, 100% of the time. It doesn't matter how many times ad age has written about them... ...or how many times they've won best places to work, or how many positive reviews they have. It could go great -- it could go ok, it could go terribly. I remind people of that all the time and they seem surprised. The best agencies in the world are not successful 100% of the time. So many factors go into an agency being successful. Some in their control. Many outside of their control. Hiring an agency could end up being the worst professional decision of your life, but I do know one thing. You should be over the moon excited on the front end and feel supremely confident. If you do NOT, you should do 1 of 2 things, or both. 1) Talk to more agencies, 2) Ask more questions of the one's you are talking to. All the social proof, past results, and testimonials STILL do not guarantee success. And, if you hire an agency, and results don't come, that doesn't mean that agency is bad, or not smart, or had bad intentions. The biggest (unintentional) mistake I think brands make when hiring agencies, is they don't talk to enough of the RIGHT agencies. Finding an agency is easy. Finding the right agency is hard. I feel so passionately about that statement I've considered getting it as a thigh tattoo. There are a BAJILLION (a real #) agencies out there. New one's enter the market ever 12 seconds. Brands don't need to speak to 10 different agencies. They need to speak to 3-4 of the RIGHT agencies.
