The PSNC owns, manages and shares the magic of the historic gilded age Newport Mansions and their grounds. The organization is one of the top tourism and economic development drivers for Newport, and one of the largest employers on Aquidneck Island. PSNC organizes events like the Newport Flower Show and the Newport Wine & Food Festival. I enjoyed learning about the history, architecture, and maintenance challenges.

The 9-member Board of Regents is the chief policy-setting body overseeing elementary and secondary education in Rhode Island, shaping the course of public education to ensure all the state's children receive the best possible education. I co-chaired the search committee to hire our new Commissioner of Education, Deborah Gist, the first change in leadership in 17 years. The 9-member Board of Regents is the chief policy-setting body overseeing elementary and secondary education in Rhode Island, shaping the course of public education to ensure all the state's children receive the best possible education. I co-chaired the search committee to hire our new Commissioner of Education, Deborah Gist, the first change in leadership in 17 years. I chaired the state and charter schools committee, opening the first new charter schools in Rhode Island in more than five years and later raising the cap. I passed a new statute allowing 'Mayoral Academies', working with Mayor Dan McKee and Mike Magee. Today the schools we opened, Blackstone Valley Prep and Achievement First, are the top-performing public schools in the state, serving >70% low income kids who achieve above the state average and on par (or above) their wealthy peers from Barrington and East Greenwich. I brought Teach for America to Rhode Island. During my tenure, we strengthened graduation standards, introduced meaningful educator evaluation, eliminated the ban on charter schools and passed the state's first "money follows the student" funding formula. As a result of our strategic plan, in 2010 we won a $75 million Federal Race to the Top grant, the largest competitive federal grant ever received in Rhode Island history.
