Here are a few of my tips for new media relations pros: Respond quickly to journalists and keep them posted on your ability to find an expert source for them. I have a great track record of connecting journalists with our experts. But sometimes our surgeons, physicians aren’t available under tight deadlines — they may be in surgery all day or tied up in clinics seeing patients. If that’s the case, let the journalist know ASAP so that they can look elsewhere for a source. They still have a story to file, whether or not your expert is in it. Not everything has to be a formal news release. E-mail pitches with a timely news hook and an available expert can sometimes generate better media coverage than a press release. Learn your role in your organization’s crisis communications plan. Partake in crisis communications trainings and mock disaster drills. Prepare holding statements in advance and identify potential spokespeople who can speak on behalf of your organization during a crisis. That may be your CEO or it may be you. You’ll likely need to work closely with your internal communications and social media teams during a crisis— and also during other times as well. Be a news junkie, always looking for “news jacking” opportunities to insert your expert/institution. Have fun!

People aren’t giving you money to fund programs. They’re donating to see results. This is an easy principle to forget. At the end of the day, your donor wants to see a beneficial change for the people or cause they are supporting. Over time, we begin to buy into the high quality of our programs (your programs are awesome, btw) and we begin to forget this is not what the donor is funding. The donor is funding a changed life. A child saved. An outcome reached. Results. Tell the donor what she will accomplish with her donation. You'll get the results you're hoping for. #nonprofit #fundraising

You’re likely sitting on a treasure - your lapsed donor file. Lapsed donors are ones who have given in the past and for whatever reason, stopped giving. Perhaps it was finances, perhaps the donor started giving to a different nonprofit, perhaps the donor had a personal connection to your nonprofit and that personal connection is no longer present. For many donors, the compassion for your cause is still present. Want to reactivate your lapsed donors? Get a lapsed donor to give again by sparking his/her compassion. How do you accomplish that? First, show gratitude to your donor for what he/she has done in the past. Second, tell the donor stories of impact. Show how donors are making an impact. Next, ask directly for a donation. Finally, say “thank you.” When you spark compassion through demonstrating impact in a cause your donor is passionate for, you have a chance to get the lapsed donor to give again. #lapsed #donors #lapseddonors #nonprofit #giving #philanthropy #compassion

Testimonies of the people your nonprofit helps are powerful, but there is one other type of testimony you might be missing. Donors like to hear testimonies of other donors. Why did they give? What did they feel when they gave? Why do they continue to support your organization? In donor psychology terms, this is referred to as “social proof.” It’s important for donors to feel a part of a community. Several years ago, a friend was telling me a story about soliciting a six figure gift from a well known local business leader. He listened to the pitch and said “Brian, I have two checks here: $500,000 and $250,000. I don’t want to be the largest donor to the campaign, so whichever check you pick up, you need to go find someone who will give the same amount. Otherwise, you’ll need to return it.” The donor has a heart to give, but wants to know other people support the organization and cause. Present more testimonies of your donors to develop more trust and a feeling of community with all of your donors. And my friend Brian? He took the $250,000 check. He knew with that in hand he could find a match - and he did. #nonprofit #fundraising #testimonies #community
