Data and observations on recent trends in VC deal terms. Along with more "structure" (participating preferred, multiples on liquidation preference, and cumulative dividends), pre-money valuations have dropped significantly more and not recovered in later stage deals but early stage deals are much closer to 2022 pre-money values & raise sizes. https://lnkd.in/g2kcxznr

Founders (especially underrepresented founders) are facing bleak prospects for obtaining venture capital investments today. The old adage passed down from our ancestors of the need to be twice as good as our white male counterparts to obtain the same opportunities has never rang more true than in today’s economic environment. The numbers don’t lie and complaining about it has limited usefulness. We must rise to the occasion, build better companies and be twice as good as the competition to succeed. Tough times require tough people to overcome the extraordinary challenges of the day, and I celebrate those founders who are doing just that. “For example, all-female teams and teams with minority members are booking fewer meetings and raising less capital than their all-male and all-majority counterparts according to DocSend’s extensive research on VC engagement with founders. In our recent conversation, Justin Izzo, DocSend’s Lead Data and Trends Analyst, noted that the gains historically underrepresented founders had made have now been largely pared away with all-female teams booking 51% fewer meetings than before.” #venturecapital #vcs #business #blackenterprise #blackfounders #womenfounders #entrepreneur

It’s no secret that venture capital is in a tough spot right now. For startups feeling that pinch—you’re not alone. But there are things you can do to get through this tight period while you hunt for your perfect investor. I recently read this Forbes article about 5 things you can do to get through a dry VC funding market. Those tips are as follows: 1. Cut expenses where you can to protect your bottom line until you get through to the other side. 2. Revise your business plan to account for this slump—you may have to move your goals back a few years. 3. Keep networking and stay in touch with existing investors so that you remain at the top of their list when they open their checkbooks. 4. Consider investments outside of venture capital—like crowdfunding, angel investors, venture debt, and others. 5. Think Out of the Box! Consider a merger to get big enough that VCs might consider investing. I’ll link the article below so you can read more, but first… These are decisions that no business leader likes to take, but it’s all about ensuring your startup’s survival until the market clears up. With that being said, the last piece of advice offered, which is to “roll up” and merge with other startups to increase your likelihood of success, made me raise an eyebrow when I read it. This strategy can work if it is in line with your goals. But keep in mind that this could mean diluting your control of the company, adding extra variables to your market decisions, and potentially stretching your resources even thinner in the meantime. Suffice to say, it is very much not a decision I would recommend making on a whim. Meet Grace. 👋 🔥Why did you choose to come work at Lexion? I am a strong proponent of legal tech and innovation. Lexion has been a leader in the industry, in my eyes, for always moving the needle forward with its capabilities and actually responding to customers' needs. As a former customer, I was a huge fan. Being on the inside is a dream and seemed like the natural progression for my career. 💗What’s the most fulfilling part of your job? Helping customers make an informed decision for their organization's growing needs is always fulfilling. Since I've been in their shoes, I love seeing the gears start to turn when we work through potential implementation and adoption challenges -- making complex manual processes smoother through automation.
