How can secondary research skills help you make a positive impact on society?
Secondary research is an opportunity to conduct a critical assessment of how we produce/reproduce, validate, accept, and amplify certain findings or facts as “accepted truths.” Conducting analysis of existing sources allows us to lend a critical eye to the hidden assumptions, environment, and biases that form our sources for secondary research. This, in turn, gives us a chance to improve upon prior understanding or consensus by challenging or affirming certain facts or findings in our own research. It can also better clarify where the real gaps lie: what questions are truly unanswered? If knowledge is a communicative, social process — then secondary research is a mode of conversation through which we can grow our knowledge.

Sanford School $10,000 NPO Grant Project
-
As part of a public policy class, a team of 9 students and I researched and evaluated 12 non-profit organizations in Durham, narrowing them down to six non-profits. We completed site visits, analyzed grant proposals, and then presented our recommendations of how to divide $10,000 amongst the final organizations. Finally, we negotiated and split the $10,000 amongst three organizations: SHIFT NC, Achievement Academy of Durham, and The Center on Actual Innocence.
