On March 21, 2024, Zarwin Baum proudly celebrated its 20th annual March Madness event in the Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia. This highly successful event drew over 1,800 local professionals, all of whom had the opportunity to network and enjoy themselves while watching the kickoff of the March Madness Tournament. For the first time, Zarwin showcased local community artisans giving live demonstrations to promote Philadelphia's large art community. The Firm is thrilled to have hosted this event for two decades, a testament to our strong community ties and commitment to fostering local connections. The event also featured a successful fundraiser for a non-profit in the community, Philabundance. With the 2024 contributions, March Madness has now raised over $350,000 for Philabundance, whose mission is to drive hunger out of the greater Delaware Valley region. The organization uses these funds to continue its food distribution, community kitchen, and job training programs across nine Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey counties. Update on the Corporate Transparency Act As a result of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) taking effect on January 1, 2024, countless existing and newly formed business entities (corporations, LLCs, or similar entities) will be required to report information regarding the entity’s beneficial ownership and controlling interests to the Finance Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) of the U.S. Treasury Department. Entities formed after January 1, 2024 are required to complete the reporting within 30-90 days (subject to the final regulations) of the entity’s formation and nearly all entities existing as of December 31, 2023 must complete the reporting by DecemberAs such, generally speaking all clients who have an ownership or managerial interest in any entity which is covered by the Act, whether currently existing or formed after January 1, 2024, will have to obtain and assemble and file all disclosure information and documentation required by the Act in order to be in compliance. “The cases are being presented for settlement and for trial with bigger medical numbers,” said Theodore M. Schaer Esq. CIPP/US Schaer, a director at Zarwin Baum DeVito Kaplan Schaer Toddy. Schaer, who handles casualty and professional liability defense, said he has seen his opponents present plans that estimate future medical care as both costlier and more extensive than what they have asked for comparable injuries in the past. What’s more, he said, plaintiffs are using life care plans for types of cases for which they never used them before, with projections claiming less severe issues like herniations and other soft-tissue injuries will require long-term treatment. According to Schaer, the rising use and value of life care plans is one driver behind climbing verdicts. He posited that plaintiffs are using the plans as another tool to seek higher damages in their cases.
