Today our YMCA staff participated in the national YMCA “We Wear Rainbow” initiative. YMCA staff wore rainbow to stand in solidarity with those working towards LGBTQ+ inclusion and equity. “We Wear Rainbow” is a recognition of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the continued effort toward equality, and an opportunity to show our commitment to ensuring that the Y is a safe and supportive place for all!

Thanks for joining us at Nashville’s annual Pride Festival this past weekend! We loved learning more about how the Y can be a welcoming and supportive place for everyone in the Middle Tennessee community. A special thanks to the Y’s LGBTQ+ Resource Network for their leadership in organizing another great experience at Nashville Pride and for the work they do to support the LGBTQ+ community throughout the year. As Pride Month comes to an end, the Y remains committed to making Middle Tennessee a welcoming and inclusive place for all! #YForAll

World Refugee Day, as designated by the United Nations, is recognized globally to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict and persecution. At the YMCA, we welcome our local refugee neighbors in Middle Tennessee and recognize the many ways refugee families and individuals enrich our schools, culture, economy and sense of connectedness. Today the YMCA is celebrating Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day or Freedom Day. Juneteenth honors June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in the state of Texas were informed that, in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, all enslaved people were freed. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. In 1997, the founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation, Ben Haith, created the Juneteenth flag with illustrator Lisa Jeanne Graf. The design depicts a bursting new star on the horizon, which represents a new freedom for a new people. The colors—red, white, and blue— were chosen because the formerly enslaved people and their descendants are all Americans. Eid al-Adha, or ‘The Feast of the Sacrifice’ for our Muslim community, is a celebration following the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and focuses on the importance of sacrifice and charity in the Islamic religion. Traditionally, this time is spent celebrating and feasting with loved ones. The YMCA of Middle Tennessee wishes all who celebrate a blessed Eid!
