Not all students in our community have access to high quality literacy materials during the summer. The Y has partnered with Read Charlotte to embed literacy practices in summer camps across Charlotte-Mecklenburg with the Summer Literacy Infusion program (SLI). To date, the summer literacy infusion model has collectively engaged 7,187 campers in literacy learning during the summer months. Charlotte 49ers alum and current player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Alex Highsmith, and his wife, Alyssa, gave our Keith Family YMCA a special black and gold visit. 🖤💛 Founders of the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation, they toured the center meeting staff and gave campers a day to remember with ice cream and playing football. Thank you so much for visiting our center and giving our campers a day they won’t forget. #alexhighsmithfamilyfoundation #ymcacharlotte #keithfamilyymca #summercamp #footballplayer #charlottenc #youthprograms #steelers #charlotte49ers

❤️ Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and dad figures in our Y family! Thank you for all you do to keep our families and our community healthy and strong! 😯 Did you know that Father’s Day started at the Y? Over 110 years ago, a young woman raised by her single father wanted to celebrate fatherhood. The first Father’s Day celebration was held at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. #happyfathersday #weloveyoudad #dadsrock #ymca #ymcacharlotte #fathersday2024

June is Immigrant Heritage Month and Liz, an ESL participant at the Harris YMCA, shares her story: “I moved to the U.S. from Colombia, looking for a better life for my family and me. Immigrant Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the efforts of immigrants, including the family members who came before me. It’s important to understand that every immigrant’s story is different and valuable. All immigrants need support and to feel welcome and loved. The ESL program at the Harris YMCA has helped me transition to my new life in the U.S. by supporting my language learning and providing me with valuable resources, including health, family, housing, and employment.” Visit our Harris and Steele Creek YMCA centers to learn about our ESL program.
