World Childhood Foundation organized the Stella Polaris Summit, a groundbreaking event on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in the fight against child sexual abuse, last week in Stockholm, Sweden. International experts, representatives from large corporations, and selected guests joined for a full-day conference to highlight the crucial role AI can play in protecting children. “The Stella Polaris Summit illustrates Childhood's unique ability to unite different industries and expertise with the common goal of preventing child sexual abuse. It is clear that we need to accelerate the use of technology, work together, and embrace various strategies to ensure children's safety. Harnessing the potential of AI to detect and prevent child sexual abuse is crucial to ultimately safeguarding children,” said HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden, the Vice Honorary Chair of the World Childhood Foundation, who attended the Stella Polaris Summit. The day consisted of sessions that highlighted ethical and legal challenges, AI-generated abuse material, interdisciplinary research projects, the importance of data, how AI can help navigate and analyze darknet forums, and much more. In addition to Princess Madeleine, Childhood USA's Board Members Charlotte Heuveldop and Lena Kaplan also attended the summit. Childhood USA supports interventions to prevent children from being subjected to sexual abuse and violence. For the past four years, we have supported Stop It Now! in the development and expansion of the WhatsOK project, an innovative online resource and confidential helpline, that provides information and guidance to youth and young adults regarding their sexual thoughts, interests, and behaviors that could be concerning, problematic or harmful. Yesterday, at the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) Colloquium in New Orleans, our Executive Director Mary L. Pulido, Ph.D. was glad to attend a presentation by Brittany Gordon, Helpline Consultant/Program Management Associate, and Csenge B. Bodi, Research Project Manager for Center for Violence Prevention Research, about the program’s growth and current evaluation process. We are honored our film "Protecting Children from Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation since 1999" was chosen as the International Impact Award winner at the Smiley Charity Film Awards in London! Thank you Nicolas Loufrani for creating the Smiley Charity Film Awards to showcase the critical and life-saving work of nonprofit organizations around the world! And thank you for helping us shine a spotlight on the epidemic of child sexual abuse and exploitation. Mary L. Pulido, Ph.D.
Chief Executive officer at The Smiley Company (creator of the Smileys). Philanthropist at Smiley movement.
“I have founded an organisation. My biggest wish is to shut it down soon.” Queen Sylvia of Sweden founded the World Childhood Foundation 25 years ago, with a vision for a world free of child sexual abuse. A world where every child is protected and safe. It’s inspiring to see influential people, like Royals, use their power to make the world a better place. Queen Sylvia of Sweden is not simply a trustee or an ambassador, she created this charity in 1999 and is still actively involved today, age 80. That’s an exceptional achievement. This charity Film, Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse and Violence Since 1999, describes the epidemic of child sexual abuse and exploitation, and how the World Childhood Foundation works nonstop to protect children from these traumas. The film won the gold Judges’ Award 2024 for International Impact at the Smiley Charity Film Awards. The World Childhood Foundation works in three thematic areas: Child Safety Online Child-Focused Response to Abuse Child Supportive Environments & Relationships The Foundation chose these themes based on the areas where children are particularly vulnerable, the needs for their work are greatest, and where the Foundation has the greatest experience and knowledge and so can make the most difference. Childhood USA is one of four global World Childhood Foundation locations, with other offices in Sweden, Germany, and Brazil. Thank you to Mary L. Pulido, Ph.D. for taking the time to submit the film in the Smiley Charity Film awards, and thanks to everyone involved at World Childhood Foundation for your hard work. Follow World Childhood Foundation to learn how you can support this important cause.

Both bills passed! Thank you to everyone who helped advance these landmark bills and promote online safety of New York’s children!
❕ There are two landmark bills in the New York State legislature that will protect kids online, and they have broad, bi-partisan support. The SAFE for Kids Act and the New York Child Data Protection Act will stop online platforms from collecting and sharing kids’ personal data and will limit addictive features of social media platforms that are known to harm young people’s mental health and development. New Yorkers: Your outreach to legislative reps will make the difference as tech companies are lobbying aggressively to counter the bills. The N.Y. legislative session ends TODAY, so please take a minute to urge your state Senator and Assembly member to support these bills that would put N.Y. at the forefront of child protection! Here’s how to contact them: https://p2a.co/XKfyThJ Please join us in protecting our children online! Mary L.
