It’s common for leaders to circulate holiday-themed greetings to colleagues and strangers at this time of year. I’ve done it in the past, and I’m happy again now to add my voice to the chorus of those offering heartfelt well wishes to all during this holiday season. This year, though, I’d like to offer a somewhat different message than I have in the past. The holidays are, for many among us, synonymous with community - which is arguably the greatest gift we can give each other. As U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy pointed out in May, though, Americans are experiencing less community, and more loneliness, than they have at arguably any time in our history. The health impacts are pervasive as they are pernicious, with lonely people living fewer years than well-connected people, and of course far fewer happy years. So this holiday season I’d like to express my hope that we might all keep those people squarely in view. May those of us who are blessed with friends and family scan our neighborhoods or apartment complexes for those who are not so lucky, and reach out - whether it’s an invitation to join a meal, or a small gift, or even a simple but extended neighborly hello. If we all reach out to just one person, I believe we can start to make good on Dr. Murthy’s historic call to action. We’ll not only benefit the lonely, but I suspect we’ll do ourselves and our society a world of good. Happiest and warmest of holidays to you, and those you love. ❤️

I believe we’re facing nothing short of a caregiver crisis in the U.S. today, given the vast struggles of adult children and others who are caring for aging parents and loved ones. Given that our society simply cannot afford to build an entirely new framework of support for this population, we must instead leverage existing resources in a deliberate and strategic way to address the issue.
