President at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII

As we prepare to celebrate the Independence Day holiday, I invite you to watch this moving guitar performance of the national anthem by one of our own – NNS firefighter and Apprentice School graduate William Davis IV. We filmed him in our shipyard as a symbolic reminder that shipbuilding is more than a job. It’s an honorable and noble calling that directly supports the freedoms we hold so dear. Thank you for keeping our Navy safe and our nation free. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

We hosted a congressional delegation from the House Armed Services Committee at the shipyard today. During the tour, the congressional members saw construction progress on Columbia- and Virginia-class submarines, as well as on Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. They also witnessed how NNS is innovating with technology, including fixture-based manufacturing, to increase efficiencies across the shipyard. June 19 is #Juneteenth. On this day in 1865, U.S. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which informed the people of Texas that slavery had ended in the United States and that all enslaved people were free – two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Join HII as we reflect on the significance of the holiday and celebrate freedom for all.
