Advocates for sex worker rights and drug policy reform are on the front lines of the harm reduction movement, providing services, mutual aid and community outreach using a compassionate approach based on public health. They have also played a critical role advocating for the divestment from punitive approaches to the sex trade and drug use. Congratulations to Cambodia on the national launch of their digital Notification and Cause of Death system. The new system will record and report Live Birth notifications, Death notifications, Medical Certification of Cause of Death and fetal deaths. The Ministry of Health has developed an accompanying Standard Operating Procedures for all health facilities to adopt the new NCOD. The leadership and participation across the Government of Cambodia, universities, provincial health departments and administrations, private health facilities and development partners demonstrates the strength of Cambodia’s commitment to improving their #CRVS system.

Medications can substantially reduce the risk of overdose death. But new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows 75% of people with opioid use disorder are not receiving medication treatment. Homelessness is a major risk factor for overdose and criminalization further exacerbates overdose risk. Housing and care are the solutions.
