About us
The Middle District of Georgia encompasses 70 of Georgia’s 159 counties and covers 25,471.5 square miles with a population of approximately 2,045,000. The Office prosecutes cases involving violations of federal laws, and represents the interests of the United States government and its agencies in criminal and civil matters. The Office investigates and prosecutes a broad array of criminal conduct of every conceivable magnitude, including violent crime, organized crime, white collar and cyber crime, fraud, public corruption, international narcotics trafficking and civil rights violations. Similarly, the Office litigates complex and significant civil cases. The district is home to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Ft. Moore in Columbus, Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany.

The leader of a violent drug trafficking organization (DTO) who directed approximately 2,000 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico into the U.S.—much of which was distributed into the Middle District of Georgia—was sentenced to two life sentences in prison for his crimes today. As part of this entire investigation, law enforcement seized $3,164,210 cash, 73 firearms, 165.22 kilos of cocaine, 1.32 kilograms of fentanyl, 11.25 ounces of heroin, 1.39 kilograms of crack cocaine, 12.57 lbs. of crystal methamphetamine, 25.35 lbs. of marijuana and 198 dosage units of controlled pharmaceuticals. This is an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) case investigated by: FBI Atlanta – Athens RA Middle Georgia Safe Streets Gang Task Force, DEA, Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force, GBI, Georgia Department of Community Supervision, Georgia Department of Corrections, Georgia Department of Revenue, Georgia State Patrol, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Gwinnett County Police Department, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, Oglethorpe County Sheriff's Office, Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Atlanta Police Department, Brookhaven Police Department, Cobb County Police Department, DeKalb County Police Department, Henry County Police Department, Marietta Police Department and South Fulton Police Department. Ariel E. Collazo Ramos, 31, of High Point, NC, is charged with one count of mailing threatening communications. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on April 9 and was unsealed on May 2. Collazo Ramos was taken into custody at his High Point residence; his initial appearance will occur in the Middle District of North Carolina at a time determined by the Court. AUSA Jefferson was sworn in on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, by Chief U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell in Macon, Georgia. AUSA Jefferson is bringing a wealth of experience from a full career in private practice, most recently as part of the trial team with an intellectual property litigation group in the California Bay Area. A graduate of George Washington University Law School, AUSA Jefferson has clerked in two federal courts, the District of Delaware and the Eastern District of Texas. Fun fact: Prior to becoming a lawyer, AUSA Jefferson was a scientist and obtained degrees in veterinary/animal science and cell biology as well as served as a research fellow for a pharmaceutical company working on finding cures for Alzheimer’s disease.
