Our team was onsite to help conduct wellness checks, pass out water, and provide services to our unhoused neighbors. Meet Ian Clark-Johnson, our Interim COO, who exemplifies the power of second chances. In just four years after being released, Ian has become our Director of Systems Engineering. We are dedicated to hiring individuals who are reentering society because we believe in their potential and resilience. 🤔 What does it look like when an enterprise intentionally engages in situations where 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 meets 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, and 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?   One of this year’s finalists for the F. M. Kirby Prize for Scaling Impact, Urban Alchemy is doing just that. Urban Alchemy recruits and trains formerly incarcerated individuals to serve as practitioners in delivering government, business, and community contracts related to homeless outreach, street cleaning, community safety, and more.   We were so impressed with Urban Alchemy’s demonstrated impact – both on the practitioners that they hire (recidivism rates among its staff are <2% vs. the national average of >40%!) AND on the communities they serve (e.g., 23% reduction in drug-related crime on blocks where they operate in San Francisco, compared to a 48% increase citywide!).    With inspiring and proximate leadership, increasing demand, and ambitious plans to scale their impact, we’re excited to follow along on Urban Alchemy’s journey. Learn more below: F. Urban Alchemy is a U.S.-based employment social enterprise, recognizes the unique assets that formerly incarcerated individuals can bring to drive positive change in communities grappling with poverty, mental illness, homelessness, and addiction. We've partnered with the City of Austin, to create "the oasis" next to the ARCH shelter. Our team has transformed a downtown parking lot into a welcoming, cool, and shaded space. At the oasis, everyone can enjoy a cold drink, find a spot to relax and connect with essential services. It's a place where people experiencing homelessness can find support and resources, but it's also a space for all Austinites to come together. Our employees from San Francisco to Culver City have been talking to elected officials about their work and its impact. In Culver City, Damien and Carrie, along with Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin, gave a tour to Eunisses Hernandez, councilwoman from CD 1. In San Francisco, Everett and our team from our 711 Post and 33 Gough discussed their successful operations at San Francisco City Hall.
