Happy Earth Day! We can't think of a better message for today than to highlight Center for Neighborhood Technology CEO Nina Idemudia, AICP's comments at the recent 50th anniversary UIC Department of Urban Planning and Policy Urban Futures panel. She drew applause as she put it straight to the audience of planners, advocates, and others:
“I hope you don't believe we as planners are a neutral profession.... We need to burn it down and build it back up again!” As a planner, she added, “I wanted to infiltrate the system and start to undo the harm that I experienced growing up in Detroit.” She talked about her first eight months leading CNT and how planners can be helpful in the policymaking “inside outside game.”
Other inspiring voices on the panel were Vocalo DJ and cultural historian and memory worker Ayana Contreras, Marisa Novara. Vice President, Community Impact, The Chicago Community Trust, Nik Theodore, UIC Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Urban Economic Development, and moderator Rachel Weber, Professor, Urban Planning and Policy, UIC.
