She has recently been named assistant director for community outreach and engagement at the UF Health Cancer Center. Michael Weaver, Ph.D., R.N., the vice chair of the UF Health Cancer Center’s Scientific Review and Monitoring Committee (SRMC) and chair of the cancer population sciences subcommittee will retire from the University of Florida this summer. Angela Starkweather, Ph.D., ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, will take over as the chair of the cancer population science subcommittee. We're thrilled to share that our very own Dr. Jason Zaremski, chief of the Sports Medicine Division in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, has been featured in a New York Times article! 📰 In the article, Dr. Zaremski explains why athletes are employing specific training techniques to prepare and acclimate for the expected heat during the Paris Olympics. His expert insights shed light on the importance of heat training for optimal performance and safety in extreme conditions. 🏅🔥

Katie Edenfield, the team physician for the UF swim and dive team, will be the head physician for the 2024 USA Olympic swim team. Dr. Edenfield has been working with Team USA for years but this is the first time that she will be going to the Olympics. She will assist with health checks pre- and post-competition and on-site medical care during the games.

Nancy Padilla-Coreano, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the UF Health Department of Neuroscience, has been named a recipient of the 2024 McKnight Scholar Award. This award is for young scientists who have begun establishing their own independent laboratories and research careers and have demonstrated a commitment to neuroscience. The $225,000 award over three years will support Padilla-Coreano’s new project titled “Neural Mechanisms of Shifts Between Social Competition and Cooperation.” https://lnkd.in/eY2txmnu

Sixteen Palm Beach and Martin Counties students spend their summer working full-time in a lab with scientists at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology. This is made possible through the Kenan Fellows High School internship program that helps encourage high students towards STEM careers.

Miranda Reid, a student physician-scientist in the College of Medicine’s Department of Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics (HOBI) won an award from the National Cancer Institute in support of implementation science. Out of the four other recipients, Reid was the only student winner. With the award money designed for the winner to create practical tools that will be shared, Reid plans to develop and test a curriculum to help undergraduate students understand and apply community engagement strategies in health care.
