Minneapolis Renaissance Coalition founder, Erin Fitzgerald, leaves JLL to focus on buying, rather than selling, office buildings. “Warren Buffet says buy when others are fearful...I believe in the future of cities."

After a six-year run, FINNEGANS Brew Co. is closing its downtown Minneapolis taproom and moving in with fellow local brewer Fulton Brewing Company. On Tuesday, the two breweries announced that Finnegans will stop serving and producing brews at its current facility at 817 5th Avenue South in downtown’s East Town neighborhood. Finnegans taproom will officially shut down on Aug. 31. But that won’t be the end: Fulton has agreed to begin producing Finnegans beers at its Northeast Minneapolis facility and serve them at its North Loop taproom by early fall. The two breweries are describing the effort as “Finnegans Residency at Fulton.” In an interview with TCB, Finnegans founder and CEO Jacquie Berglund described the move as a “neat opportunity between two like-minded partners.” “That’s what business is supposed to be about, right?” she said.

News, from our editor...
Typically we're in the business of covering acquisitions, but I'm delighted to share that Twin Cities Business has made one. TCB is the new home of Tech.MN content, including its go-to startup events calendar (a partnership with LaunchMN). Tech.MN connected the startup community at a time before mainstream media paid it much attention. TCB has really ramped up coverage in recent years and our StartMN hub will carry on Tech.MN's tradition of serving as a resource for startup news, advice and perspectives. Thanks to Cihan Behlivan and Reed Robinson for recognizing TCB as the right partner. Startups are such a vital part of Minnesota's business community—we are honored to share your stories.

The new Amtrak route from St. Paul to Chicago had a good first month, but most of what’s been reported beyond that is wild hyperbole. Our resident rail expert Adam Platt explains.

Is downtown Minneapolis entering a "comeback era"? When Simone Biles performed her floor routine at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials to Taylor Swift, she helped Minneapolis come close to matching a hotel record set one year ago, when Swift’s Eras tour came to town. Here's the latest data from Meet Minneapolis.

At their simplest, vacancy rates are calculated by adding the total rentable square footage in office buildings divided by the total amount of space. And yet, different firms who publish vacancy rates rarely come up with the same figures. For the first quarter of 2024, Colliers published an overall vacancy of 12.3% for St. Paul’s central business district. Avison Young said 19.1%, while Cushman & Wakefield reported 27%. The St. Paul Building Owners and Managers Association’s (BOMA) had the highest rate at 31.5%, even though that group initially reported a much lower figure. How can four sources produce such wildly different figures for the same area?
