Kaylee Schunk’s petite size and friendly demeanor don’t make it obvious that she’s a tenacious advocate for her patients in the Cardiac Care Unit. She was recently credited with saving a patient’s life for following her instincts and urging doctors to reevaluate her patient. “She is not afraid to be an advocate for the patient,” explained the patient, a Tucson father of 10. “She really went overboard to push to see what is was.” The man was in the hospital for a heart-related procedure, but symptoms that appeared after surgery didn’t seem consistent with his recovery. While gas or bowel discomfort might be expected after surgery, Schunk said this was something else. “This was hard, like a soda can in his right lower quadrant,” Schunk explained. “And I could tell how bad the pain was because he doesn’t wear his pain well. I could see it in his face.” Schunk pushed for further evaluation to confirm her suspicions. Testing showed a perforated bowel, or small hole in the colon. Schunk credited instinct and her continued care of the same patient with helping to identify the problem. “It made a difference that I saw him before and after (heart) surgery,” Schunk said. “I choose to build a relationship with my patients. That’s my favorite part of the job.” The patient agreed, saying that if Schunk hadn’t cared for him consistently during his more than two-week stay, then she may not have realized how much discomfort he was in. “It made a big difference that she saw me from the beginning, seeing the bad and good,” he said. “I don’t think it’s always like that in hospitals.” He said Schunk even advocated for him to get a larger room so his wife and family could be comfortable when they came to visit. Schunk spent 10 years as a restaurant server, until becoming a cardiac care nurse just 18 months ago. “In school, the cardiac tests and exams were the hardest things for me,” she said. “I figured if I started in cardiac care than I could do anything, because that was my biggest challenge.” Initially she felt called to work in newborn intensive care, but she may have found her heart is in cardiac care. She used to build relationships with her restaurant customers, and she knew she could put that skill to use even more effectively in a hospital. “You have charts and labs, but you really need to listen to the patient,” Schunk said. “When you know the patient, you can get a better understanding of what’s going on.” The patient said Schunk is “an asset” to the cardiac care team and a lifesaver for being so persistent.

A Huge Thank You to Our Amazing TMC Patient Care Technicians! We at TMC want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on our incredible Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)! These dedicated individuals are the backbone of our patient care teams, providing essential support to our nurses and ensuring the well-being of our patients. PCTs wear many hats. They assist nurses with tasks like taking vital signs, collecting samples, bathing patients, and keeping patient comfortable, but their role goes far beyond these duties. PCTs are also a source of compassion for our patients during often difficult times. One such PCT who exemplifies this dedication is Odessa, who has been a pillar of our team for an incredible 26 years! Odessa takes her job seriously and is known and loved by everyone at TMC – patients, staff, and colleagues alike. Her passion for patient care is evident in everything she does, and she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure our patients have a positive experience. (Odessa is pictured here with her manager Roxanne) Odessa's story is just one example of the many outstanding PCTs we have here at TMC. We are incredibly grateful for their tireless efforts, their commitment to excellence, and the compassionate care they provide to our patients each and every day. Thank you, PCTs! You are truly the heart of TMC!

TMC joins select group as Registered Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center If your cancer care requires radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) such as Iodine-131 ablation for hyperthyroidism or thyroid cancer, Radium-223 Xofigo for bone metastasis from castrate resistant prostate cancer, or Yttrium-90 for liver tumors a registered radiopharmaceutical therapy center is the best choice for care. RPT treats cancer cells with radioactive drugs. TMC is one of only three hospitals in Arizona recognized as a Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers of Excellence. This designation means we have the training, personnel, equipment and experience needed to provide excellent RPT. TMC’s Nuclear Medicine department was vetted by a group of RPT experts to earn this designation from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. The Society said TMC met the criteria to be a comprehensive RPT center. Thanks to our nuclear medicine staff for working to earn this designation as they continue to put our patients first! #SNMMIRPTCOE
