Happy Juneteenth! Three years ago, Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday to celebrate the effective end of slavery in the United States. The holiday commemorates June 19th, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to deliver the news of emancipation to Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth's recent elevation to a federal holiday is due to Opal Lee of Fort Worth, TX, nicknamed the "Grandmother of Juneteenth." After decades of community service following her retirement from teaching in 1976, Lee turned her sights to making Juneteenth a national holiday. In 2016, Opal Lee began walking from Texas to Washington D.C., walking 2.5 miles each day to represent the two-and-a-half years between the Emancipation Proclamation and its arrival in Texas. After four years of campaigning, Opal Lee was invited to the White House for the signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Since then, Opal Lee has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024 at the age of 97. Walks will be held across the nation this Juneteenth to commemorate the holiday, and Opal Lee and other organizers hope to see the holiday grow to be celebrated like the Fourth of July -- a day of festivities and reflection on the history and future of America. https://lnkd.in/g8kUQp_i https://lnkd.in/gviht33c

Today we attended the 2024 Earth Day Clean Up, hosted by the Austin Rowing Dock and the The Trail Conservancy. This is our second year joining an impressive number of volunteers to clean the land from the trail. We are grateful to have this opportunity to come together with our community for a cleaner environment. The Austin Fire Department is proud to announce that the new Goodnight Ranch Joint Public Safety Station, located in SE Austin, is now In-Service. & This might be the coolest fire station ever!! Hats off to the design-build team of JE Dunn, with PGAL Architects & Studio Balcones Landscape Architects for an incredible job! This is the fourth of five stations to be built by this team with Eric Keplinger, JE Dunn, at the helm. This project is on track to be LEED Silver Certified and has photovoltaics, eco-landscaping and energy-efficient lighting throughout. The building also features decontamination space, ventilated PPE storage, Plymovents to remove vehicle exhaust, individual sleeping quarters and advanced Locution, all for Firefighter cancer prevention and fatigue reduction best practices. A big shout out to the City of Austin Capital Delivery Services and previous AFD Logistics Chiefs - FC Palmer Buck, Woodlands Fire Department and FC Tony Haden, Pedernales Fire Department for their vision and efforts to make this station a reality. 2-years ago this Austin #car_park got a #solar_upgrade. More than 6,600 solar panels on the Blue parking garage at Austin Bergstrom International Airport are now producing 1.5MW. Shouldn't every car park get a solar upgrade? We have so many options.
