Earlier this week, Technical Services and Basin Planning staff joined Andrew Brinker, the lead scientist for the Trinity River Turtle Survey, to learn about the different turtle species in the area. During the survey, TRA staff learned how to set up turtle traps, handle and identify various species, and tag each turtle for a long-term study. Brinker, who teaches at Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant County College, started the survey in 2017. Since then, he has identified and tagged over 1,000 turtles in the DFW metroplex. In this recent survey, TRA staff tagged four different species: the Red-eared Slider, the Mississippi Map Turtle, the Razor-backed Musk Turtle, and the Spiny Softshell Turtle.

It’s a great day to #KeepTexasBeautiful! Our environmental scientists spent the morning volunteering at an Adopt-a-Stream cleanup, removing trash from Walnut Creek. Thank you to our partners, the City of Grand Prairie, the Trinity Coalition, and staff from the Google Data Center, for facilitating this event. Together, we’re making a difference!

The Trinity River Authority Lake Livingston Dam repairs slated for completion Monday, July 8, were completed and tested Sunday, July 7. The completed repairs will help ensure that the dam is ready for the potential heavy rainfall related to Hurricane Beryl. So far, about 4-5 inches of rain fell in the area. If additional rain falls, related to the storm, the dam should perform as designed and handle the potential high-flow event without impacting the integrity of the dam. Ten of the 12 dam gates are in full operation. The two gates that are not in operation are slated to be back online in the fall. For more information, visit the TRA website at trinityra.org.
