We are thrilled to share that David Cowan, NTMWD Watershed Manager, is being honored this year at both the Regional level (nominated by Collin County SWCD) and the state level (by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board) as a Friend of Conservation.   David plays a key role in implementing the Lavon Lake Watershed Protection Plan through collaboration with stakeholders, the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, Collin County SWCD, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.   He is dedicated to protecting Texas’ natural resources by working with partners to address the diverse needs of our region, while prioritizing public health. Education is also a big part of David’s conservation efforts, involving hands-on demonstrations, presentations, and collaborative programs with local schools and cities.   Join us in congratulating David on this incredible achievement!

Bois d’Arc Lake was decades in the making and with the completion of the Leonard Water Treatment Plant we began delivering potable water to our service area last year. While the recent rains in our area allowed us to open for public recreation last month, we’ve also now gotten to see the labyrinth weir and service spillway in action. Here are some quick facts about this important piece of infrastructure at Bois d’Arc Lake. ·        Bois d'Arc Lake was designed and built primarily as a water supply reservoir with recreational opportunities. ·        The Dam's service spillway has a 60-foot-wide, 3-cycle labyrinth weir with the set conservation pool elevation of 534 mean sea level (MSL). ·        Bois d’Arc Lake is not permitted and constructed for use as flood control reservoir and therefore does not deliberately store or release flood waters like many other lakes across Texas. ·        Once the lake reaches full capacity (534’ MSL) any inflows or floodwaters that enter the lake spill over through the lake’s service spillway and flow downstream. ·        Once Bois d’Arc Lake reached its full conservation pool last week, the water flowed over the spillway for the first time. ·        Unlike other area lakes like Lavon and Ray Hubbard, Lewisville, Bois d’Arc Lake is in the Red River Basin, meaning any overflow travels generally north into Honey Grove and Bois d'Arc Creeks, eventually reaching the Red River. ·        For safety reasons, the dam and spillway are not accessible to the public. Boaters and anglers are advised to follow the posted signage and not enter areas marked by floating buoys. See the spillway at work....

These lakes provide drinking water to over 2.2 million North Texans and we're fortunate to be in this position as we approach the hotter summer months when water demands are highest. Bois d'Arc Lake provides a vital new water source for our region, but its benefits extend beyond that. North Texas Municipal Water District partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to make Bois d'Arc Lake a destination for anglers, and we're excited to see people enjoying fishing the lake after last week's recreational opening. 

Congratulations to our Bois d’Arc Lake Operations Team on the recreational opening of the lake! 🎣 Boaters and anglers were excited to experience the lake for the first time, which wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team at NTMWD. 🚤 Opening Bois d’Arc Lake for recreation is a significant milestone that has culminated from decades of work across our entire organization for the planning, design, construction, and operation of our newest water source for the North Texas region.
