Watch the video below to learn more about how our portfolio company Living Carbon is enhancing the carbon drawdown capacities of trees on millions of acres of land including managed timberland and underutilized, abandoned and degraded land. 👇🌱
Living Carbon is fast-tracking trees for the planet’s future. 🌲 The company’s enhanced photosynthesis trait allows trees to grow faster and accumulate about 53% more biomass, leading to greater carbon sequestration and longer-lasting wood products. We’re thrilled to support Maddie Hall, Patrick Mellor, and the entire team at Living Carbon for many reasons. 👩🔬 Product Innovation: Prioritizing product innovation over practice changes (e.g., no-till farming) simplifies the adoption of nature-based solutions for farmers. 🌱 Land Restoration: In the US, 1.6 million acres of degraded land can benefit from Living Carbon's trees, which proliferate, tolerate heavy metals, and help restore ecosystems. 📈 VCM: Living Carbon supports a robust Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) by generating diverse income streams (e.g., timber) and benchmarking its trees against others to ensure high-quality credits. 🌳 Scalability: Tree enhancement is scalable due to existing planting infrastructure. Living Carbon focuses on the Poplar tree, leveraging its well-known genetics to optimize carbon removal processes. Take a tour through the Living Carbon greenhouse below!

Our portfolio company Ion Storage Systems announced a major milestone on the path to commercialization by achieving 800 cycles in its solid state battery cells. The company's cells were able to cycle without experiencing compression or volume changes, exceeding the cycle life demands of the consumer electronics battery industry. "I'm extremely proud of this latest accomplishment," commented ION's CTO, Dr. Gregory Hitz, "It is unprecedented for an anodeless cell to reach this kind of cycle life without compression. ION has now produced a cell with performance that's compelling to replace a huge portion of the lithium-ion market. Next up is building it into commercial format, multilayer cells off our pilot line and doing so with high repeatability to put in customers' hands." Our Senior Portfolio Engagement Director Sahil Segal recently moderated a panel focused on the intersection of robotics innovation and investment with speakers Xuhui Shao from Foothill Ventures, Sasha Ostojic from Playground Global, and Han H. from GV (Google Ventures). See the full discussion in Foothill Ventures' blog: https://lnkd.in/gSYDtthY
Mid-July we hosted a Robotics Founder & Funder summit that welcomed an insightful night with discussions surrounding topics including data collection, vertical versus horizontal integration, hardware, software and more. The full discussion from our VC panel is now live to read here: https://shorturl.at/YvtAS Feel free to leave a comment on your thoughts and stay tuned for the startup panel blog coming soon! Below are some notable points from this panel: - Robotics Investment Trends: Robotics investments have fluctuated with primary influence from labor shortages and technological advancements, but with the growing Western and Asian markets, a rebound is expected. - Vertical Integration in Robotics: Successful robotics companies often integrate both hardware and software. The debate continues on the effectiveness of software-only solutions versus integrated systems. - The Importance of Data + Challenges: There are limitations of simulations in robotics, which means real-world data is crucial for addressing edge cases and achieving high accuracy for the development of robust robotic systems. With significant data challenges, owning a strong data strategy is essential for success in the field. Once again, we’d like to share our appreciation for our wonderful panelists: Han H. of GV (Google Ventures), Sasha Ostojic of Playground Global and Xuhui Shao of Foothill Ventures, and our moderator Sahil Segal of Toyota Ventures.

Our portfolio company Brilliant Planet is harnessing the power of marine microalgae to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The company plans to sell high-quality carbon removal credits derived by cultivating and desiccating algae, then sequestering the #carbon stored within it by burying it deep underground. The buried #biomass is about 40% pure carbon, so every ton of dried #algae represents the equivalent of 1.6 metric tons of CO₂. Toyota Ventures is excited to announce our investment in Renewabl's seed round led by Helen Ventures. Renewabl has developed a software platform that analyzes companies’ renewable energy portfolios and facilitates Renewable Energy Certificate transactions via tenders or marketplace. The technology automatically matches companies’ energy consumption patterns on an hourly basis with the existing renewable energy solutions the company has procured as well as recommends the optimal profiles of renewable energy developers and their projects to achieve the company’s target Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) score. “We’re impressed by the expertise of Renewabl’s founding team and their approach to optimizing clean energy procurement. Renewabl’s software platform and marketplace are key stepping stones on the path to offering impactful and traceable solutions for strengthening the claims of renewable energy credits and the realization of a true zero-carbon electricity grid.” — Lisa Coca, Climate Fund partner, Toyota Ventures Read more on the Toyota Ventures blog: https://lnkd.in/d8gtCAVa
