Big 🙌 to Fortune for the opportunity to share my 2¢ about the state of #AI in Hollywood… And right on cue, the reaction (aka tar + feathering) to Ashton Kutcher’s recent comments about AI highlights how the fear + loathing continues...  As an industry, we need to find a place somewhere between irrational fear + irrational exuberance so we can leverage this new technology in meaningful ways... A few things to consider that can hopefully help foster productive dialogue + exploration… 💡 AI is not responsible for Hollywood’s current existential crisis  💡 AI can unlock opportunities for new + diverse creators who have been abandoned by the legacy system by democratizing studio-grade production capabilities, and in turn, help deliver the kind of content + experiences that younger audiences want  💡 Technology is not inherently bad, but what humans do with it can be helpful or harmful Fear + anger is preventing us from focusing on how to use this technology for good -- to help more projects get made at a time when the industry feels like it’s going in reverse, for writers and animators to spend more of their time being creative and for new storytellers to bring their ideas to life... And there is no doubt at the heart of all this will be the responsible + ethical use of AI, something that will rely on our uniquely human qualities and just so happens to be a tale as old as time... At a time when Hollywood moguls + legacy incumbents are spreading dire messages about the impact of #ai on Hollywood, big 🙌 to TheWrap for giving my co-founder Luisa Huang and me the space to tell a different story… One that features a new wave of storytellers as the heroes, empowered by AI production + community-building tech, who will create the next generation of original character worlds... And in a year that will undoubtedly be filled with salacious claims + “flexible truths,” here are some fun facts that support our belief that AI tech can propel the next animation renaissance... 🚢 The U.S. shipped nearly 80% of animation jobs overseas -- long before AI was even in the picture. We have not been the animation powerhouse we used to be because we found a cheaper way to produce overseas. 📷 We first became the world leader in animation way back in the 1930s thanks to the introduction of a new technology - the multiplane camera - that produced such efficiencies to the production and storytelling of the craft that new animation content and jobs surged, peaking in the 1970s. 💪 Today, AI is that game changing technology that will empower more creators to participate in this medium which has historically been off limits to all but a few. It will generate desperately needed new, original IP in this current climate dominated by sequels. And in the process, it will bring animation jobs back to the U.S. 🚀 Using AI as a production tool, we’ve been able to supercharge our output and reduce time from concept to creation by 90%.
