Some good news as we head into the final weekend of Pride month: Funders for LGBTQ Issues has reported that Tides Foundation is the fifth-largest funder of LGBTQ issues in the United States! We're also the 4th-largest funder of LGBTQ issues by number of grants. Other takeaways from Funders for LGBTQ Issues' report: ➡️ Funding for trans communities from foundations increased by 34%, a result of strategic philanthropic organizing efforts that ramped up in response to a surge in legal and policy attacks on trans lives. ➡️ For the first time, a majority of grants from U.S. foundations were general operating support grants—vital for ensuring that LGBTQ organizations can function sustainably in the long term. ➡️ Funding to Black LGBTQ communities doubled from 7% to 14%, although total overall funding for LGBTQ communities of color decreased. The United States Supreme Court decision to dismiss Moyle v. United States is a major setback to reproductive justice and health equity. As an organization committed to social justice, we are deeply concerned that the Court did not outright affirm the right to emergency reproductive healthcare. This absence of federal protection puts birthing persons at greater risk from life-threatening pregnancy complications. And the research is clear: all restrictions on abortion access, including emergency abortions, disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities and other communities historically denied power. Black women are already three times more likely to die a pregnancy-related death than white women. This indecision not only risks lives and perpetuates harm, but also discourages physicians from serving in states with strict abortion bans, leaving vulnerable populations without access to essential reproductive health care. We remain committed to working with our donor and social change partners to ensure all people have equitable access to lifesaving reproductive healthcare.

Two years ago, we lost the constitutional right to abortion—but we didn’t give up. This Wednesday, Tareya Palmer, MPA of Tides Foundation’s Just Health Fund will go live on Instagram with Rhiannon Carnes of Ohio Women's Alliance to discuss the path forward. In 2022, Rhiannon Carnes was one of five Reproductive Justice Heroes to receive Tides’ Jane Bagley Lehman Award. In 2023, she led OWA in reaching out to 1.3 million voters to secure abortion access in Ohio for generations to come. Hear about her focus in 2024 and what the reproductive justice movement needs in order to win. The conversation starts here at 1pm ET on 6/26: https://lnkd.in/dsBhYZuX

BREAKING: The Supreme Court has decided to uphold access to mifepristone, a medication used in nearly two-thirds of all U.S. abortions. As a philanthropic organization committed to systems change and ensuring the well-being of Black and Brown communities and other communities denied power, we acknowledge the importance of this decision and call on our partners and the greater social sector to remain steadfast in championing reproductive justice until all people have access to a safe abortion. For every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations, only 4 cents goes towards trans communities. Gabriel Foster and Ola Osaze of the Trans Justice Funding Project talked to Northern California Grantmakers about why it's so critical to fund trans leadership in this moment—and if you work in philanthropy, you need to read this now. A fund at Tides Foundation, TJFP is a BIPOC trans and nonbinary-run funding initiative that distributed $2.9 million to 428 groups in 2024 alone, and has resourced over 2,000 groups since their founding. For most of these groups, TJFP is their first funder.
