Two years ago, we lost the constitutional right to abortion—but we didn’t give up. This Wednesday, Tareya Palmer, MPA of Tides Foundation’s Just Health Fund will go live on Instagram with Rhiannon Carnes of Ohio Women's Alliance to discuss the path forward. In 2022, Rhiannon Carnes was one of five Reproductive Justice Heroes to receive Tides’ Jane Bagley Lehman Award. In 2023, she led OWA in reaching out to 1.3 million voters to secure abortion access in Ohio for generations to come. Hear about her focus in 2024 and what the reproductive justice movement needs in order to win. The conversation starts here at 1pm ET on 6/26: https://lnkd.in/dsBhYZuX

Abortion access and quality healthcare were out of reach for so many people *before* Roe was overturned. "Roe is absolutely the floor," says Chelsea Williams-Diggs, Executive Director of the New York Abortion Access Fund. "Roe was never enough." We can't count on the state to protect our bodily autonomy. It's networks of care and the resources within our communities that will get us through these times. In this week's episode, BIPOC reproductive justice activists explore how abortion access has changed after the 2022 Dobbs ruling, and share the frameworks for care that are helping abortion seekers get the care they deserve. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ▶️ Watch on The Laura Flanders Show YouTube channel. 🎧 Listen wherever you get your podcasts. 📺 Check your local listings at our website. 🔹 Follow The Laura Flanders Show on Patreon for full, uncut conversations. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- #Abortion #RadicalCare #ReproJustice

Healthcare for women in America is in crisis. But it’s not just abortion care: the women’s health landscape in general is in need of attention. Taking a strong stance on politics, Hey Jane believes there’s power in de-stigmatization and accurate information – and is using billboards to say so. “Kate Cox was just denied emergency care for an abortion by the Supreme Court of Texas,” says Natalie Birnbaum, a healthcare attorney and legal consultant who specializes in telehealth for medication abortion advocacy. “By highlighting these stories, along with destigmatizing abortion and being willing to have courageous conversations about how we can raise awareness around these court cases – that’s where brands can be supportive. As storytelling vehicles [for change].” Around 45% of all abortions are unsafe. A scary statistic considering 14 US states have a near-total ban on abortion and 15 restrict access to medication abortion. “We firmly believe that access to abortion is an essential aspect of health care”, says Hey Jane CEO and co-founder, Kiki Freedman, “and, despite attempts by some to create polarization around it, the majority of people in the United States are in agreement with us.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ebcAiTj6 #abortion #abortionrights #abortionishealthcare #women #womenshealth #womenshealthcare

🔍 Unintended pregnancies have been found to double the likelihood of experiencing interpersonal violence. This alarming statistic highlights the critical need for accessible abortion care to protect women's safety and well-being. 👩⚕️ When women are unable to access safe and legal abortion services, they face increased risks of sustained physical violence from partners, exacerbating already vulnerable situations. Providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion access, is essential in mitigating these risks and ensuring that women can make the best decisions for their health and safety. 📢 Support leaders who prioritize reproductive rights and healthcare freedom. Fight against restrictive laws that endanger women. Join Iowans for Health Liberty in advocating for comprehensive healthcare access and reproductive justice. Together, we can create a safer, more equitable society for all. Abortion is health care.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is a human right. This week, Bumble Inc. proudly joined 19 prominent business peers from a range of industries to show up as part of #DontBanEquality’s latest ad campaign, making the case that policies to restrict reproductive healthcare have a significant economic impact on the workforce and call on the business community to protect abortion and reproductive healthcare access. The private sector plays a crucial role in safeguarding access to reproductive care. We feel it’s our duty not just to provide our workforce with access to reproductive healthcare, but to speak out—and speak loudly—against the retrogression of women’s rights. We will continue to speak up. We won’t go back.

After Tuesday's vote in Ohio, seven states have voted on abortion-related ballot measures since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. Abortion rights supporters have prevailed each time. For KFF Health News I previewed the efforts that are already underway to put abortion-related ballot measures in front of voters in as many as 11 more states next year. In Iowa, for example, efforts to pass a state constitutional amendment declaring no right to abortion began in 2021, although the legislature has yet to finish the process. In Colorado, competing initiatives — one to enshrine abortion protections and one to ban abortion — could potentially appear on the same ballot if supporters of both manage to garner enough signatures. And in Missouri, potential ballot measures to increase access to abortion have been bogged down in litigation for months, delaying the collection of signatures and highlighting internecine conflicts on both sides of the issue. In the last few years, we have seen renewed attacks on civil rights and liberties -- including our right to abortion. We need lawmakers that will expand abortion access for all New Jerseyans. New Jerseyans need expansion and protection of access to abortion care. While abortion remains legal in New Jersey, many people cannot access the reproductive care they need because New Jersey lawmakers have not addressed the barriers that push care out of reach for too many in our state. To begin dismantling these barriers, New Jersey lawmakers must take immediate action to expand access to abortion in our state by passing the Reproductive Equity Act. It is a relief that the abortion pill mifepristone, a widely used, safe, and effective medication, remains available today—but its future remains very much in doubt. In a time when rates of maternal mortality are far too high and abortion rights are being increasingly curtailed and even criminalized, the Supreme Court’s decision provides only temporary reassurance rather than permanent peace of mind. Today’s ruling is focused on ‘standing,’ which is a legal term. But in our view, it also carries a more profound meaning: when it comes to the deeply personal choice about whether and when to have children, ‘standing’ belongs to the women and families making these decisions in consultation with their healthcare providers. The proper role for policymakers at all levels is to help ensure that the full range of reproductive healthcare services is available everywhere, and that cost or insurance status is never a barrier to access. Health—including all forms of reproductive healthcare—ought not to be a privilege for some but a right for all. The risk to the right remains. But the fight to secure it lives on. #ReproductiveJustice #SCOTUS

This Week in Abortion is back. This week the newsletter includes a feature on Systems Thinking by Sharita R. Thomas. Zooming Out provides a layperson’s intro to the practice of systems thinking and how it can be applied to abortion access. "Large and complex issues such as these often leave us feeling frustrated and helpless to act. But Systems Thinking, used in a variety of fields from business to academia, provides us with tools to simplify systems and identify effective solutions. In the first part of this feature, I’m going to walk through the foundation of Systems Thinking using as an example the issue of access to obstetric services in the United States. In the upcoming second part, I’ll expand on Systems Thinking methods useful for tackling the issue of access to abortion services."
