Is your organization or company penny pinching on DEI? My guest this month on Sundays with Vernā is Thomas Vozzo. Tom is a former C-level exec who rerouted his life and took up the helm of Homeboy Industries, a human services organization and social enterprise focused on helping people rebuild, recover, and develop skills after prison and gang life. We talked about DEI and how businesses actually thrive through the practice of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Homeboy Industries is a shining example of inclusion, boasting an exceptionally high percentage of staff who have come through the program. These success stories are not specific to non-profits. Businesses benefit when people can be at their best. Tom talks to us about how this can be accomplished on my next episode. Tune in this Sunday on all music platforms that play podcasts. Join my podcast page and listen to our discussion. https://lnkd.in/e29Be8Xw Where could you company or organization invest more in cultivating environments that are people-focused?

  • Integrity is measured in times of conflict and not peace. This passage from Vernā’s book, What If I Say the Wrong Thing, 25 Habits for Culturally Effective People, can be a challenging task for some if not all of us. It is exceedingly difficult to humanize and empathize with someone whom we perceive as our adversary. What aspects of conflicts do you find most difficult to navigate, and how do they impact your overall approach to resolving disagreements? Knowing ourselves and how we deal with conflict is a huge step in interrupting unconscious bias.  For more tips on how to accomplish this, check out the book and let us know in the comments how you would go about humanizing your adversary.

  • Vernā appeared on The Branding Room Only Podcast hosted by Paula Edgar, Esq. recently and talked about cultivating a personal brand, especially as a consultant and DEI practitioner. Personal branding is unique in this field because it relies on reputation, word of mouth, integrity, and excellence. She gives a first-hand account of her methodology of success as a DEI pioneer after 25+ years in the field.  Don’t miss this gem of a conversation! Check out the episode and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eY5Fj4qF

  • We've heard the term “freedom” thrown around a lot this week. There are many different definitions for different people, but what about freedom from reaction and/or from being controlled by other people's actions? How free can we be if we don't master how we react to the hundreds of thousands of individual stimuli we interact with daily? Unlock the potential of mindfulness in your life! Vernā's personal story in the second part of her video is a testament to its life-changing effects. Go to Verna's IG for exclusive content! https://lnkd.in/euP8gfEb

  • Have you listened to Vernā’s commencement speech on our website? This quote is one of the many wonderful nuggets of wisdom from her speech: we want to make it a reality. To do that, we need to push past our comfort. We’re here to do that with you. Visit the website for the full video and online courses to help you build your skills in cultivating the Beloved Community. Check out our blog for the entire speech! https://lnkd.in/epcvSQ3K

  • “My Boss would call me queer all the time and slap me in the face.” Our exploration into supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals beyond Pride has revealed that many still face harassment and discrimination. TVMC's mission is to raise awareness and educate on interpersonal skills to help enhance the experiences and opportunities of all individuals in the workplace. Pride is a joyous time, and as we wrap up Pride Month, we want to share a reminder to continue supporting  LGBTQIA+ people year-round! Enjoy our report and share it with someone you think would want to join this mission. To improve your own unconscious bias, cross cross-cultural communication skills, or cultivate inclusive workplaces, check out our  online courses at www.vernamyers.com Happy Pride, everyone! We are sending our hearts out to everyone who is celebrating this month!
