We’ve recently had a series of programs become available in our YouTube channel, including this Living History with Dr. Paul Gregory. Dr. Gregory spent time with the Oswald family in 1962. Mid video you’ll find some very rarely seen home movie footage of Oswald with his family. This program took place at the Museum on November 10, 2023.

It’s #flagday2024 and we’re sharing items in the Museum’s collection that feature the American flag. The flag seen here was the American flag flown over the U.S. Senate during official mourning period in 1963 for President John F. Kennedy. This flag was raised over the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol Building on November 7, 1963, then lowered to half-staff on Friday, November 22, 1963 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The flag remained at half-staff over the Senate wing of the Capitol until the end of the official month of mourning on December 22, 1963. Flags flown over the U.S. Capitol routinely fly for 30 days. We’ve also included the letter of authenticity. The second artifact from our collection is a Textile of Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy from around 1968. Both artifacts are objects from The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza Collection. #usa #flagday🇺🇸 #patriotic #leaders #jfk

Where did the term grassy knoll come from? See the clip here. Though UPI reporter Merriman Smith is officially credited with coining the term ‘grassy knoll,’ Joe Carter reported what he’d seen from the White House press bus to the wire service under Merriman’s byline. Watch this Living History in its entirety on the Museum’s YouTube channel. #jfk #grassyknoll #livinghistory

We are so proud of our Guest Services Team! D CEO Magazine named this team a finalist in their 7th Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards as Nonprofit Team of the Year! Our team works very hard to ensure guests at the Museum have the experience the subject matter commands. They understand what emotions the exhibit evokes for thousands of visitors each year, and they handle every challenge with empathy and grace. The job isn’t always easy and can sometimes seem thankless, but we are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to brag about them. #teamoftheyear #dceo #nonprofitawards

Our friends with the Texas Freedom Project host the 5th Aya Symposium THIS Thursday 6/6. It’s is an all-day event with workshops, networking, panels & keynote speakers for Freedom Colony Descendants, educators, historians, preservationists, researchers, genealogists & more. The fifth Aya Symposium will focus on the unique histories, cultures, and characteristics of Texas freedom colonies in and near urban centers – especially Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. The day will feature stories of emancipated Texans’ migration to these metro areas and discussions on the challenges these communities in Texas and the U.S. currently face. Including: * gentrification * accelerated property loss * the scourge of past government zoning * freeways splitting communities in half * planning & eminent domain decisions * how/why these communities tend to be located in or near flood prone areas, industrial sites and/or dumps. Learn about these issues and the work of those offering solutions and strategies for addressing them as residents and descendants strive to maintain each community’s distinctive history, culture and contribution to the story of Texas and the United States. Don’t miss the Aya Symposium, June 6, 2024 at UNTDallas. Find more information about this event and register at ayasymposium.org.
