When images from the 2023 The Running Event come in and they are just so good. Honored to have been this year’s keynote speaker, but even more special was being at a conference with such a passionate group of people, filled with true camaraderie and a forward thinking mentality. The popularity of running today has evolved the consumer footwear landscape. It is no longer an activity reserved solely for the morning run fanatic or marathoner. Running has become a more inclusive and supportive activity where anyone no matter their skill-level or background is more actively participating. We are seeing brands and retailers are seizing that opportunity through intentional branding, innovative technology and new store formats. But through insights and research we know that purrchase decisions primarily come down to consumers feeling assured that they have the right fit and ability to perform when stepping into motion, supporting by authentic communities and brands that stand behind their values. As consumer engagement across various technologies in-store has become more habitual, consumer perception has evolved. An augmented reality experience in store may appear incredibly fun, but is it easy to use? A self-checkout offering may appear to save time, but was it a seamless process? Consumers are looking to brands and retailers to apply technology in-store that is rooted in intentionality, while delivering something new that meets baseline needs and expectations. A key opportunity is for brands to engage consumers in-store through simulated digital experiences. Nearly 50% of  all respondents are interested in using immersive technology that allows them to digitally test activities or conditions that are representative of a product’s purpose or function.
