July is Sarcoma & Bone Cancer Awareness Month. This rare cancer type accounts for approximately 1% of adult cancers and 15-20% of childhood cancers. Unfortunately, sarcoma is often resistant to existing treatment methods, and there is a need for new therapeutic options. Texas Oncology–Methodist Dallas Cancer Center welcomed Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) for a site visit. Rep. Crockett toured our facilities and met with our team, including practice director Angie Grappe and Dr. Darshan Gandhi. We discussed community oncology's importance, local care for South Dallas patients, and key issues like payment disparities and clinical research access. READ: New research presented at ASCO 2024 showed that GLP-1 RAs reduce obesity-related cancers at a similar rate to bariatric surgery. Debra Patt, MD PhD MBA noted that the research "shows that both mechanisms of facilitating weight loss can lower the risk of obesity-related cancers” and that GLP-1 RAs offer patients a viable nonsurgical option. Alice Rostkowski, Vice President of Houston Collie Rescue, faced a daunting challenge when she received a stage II breast cancer diagnosis despite no immediate family history of cancer. Uncertain about her next steps, she found guidance through her doctor, Jorge Darcourt, M.D., MHCM, at Texas Oncology–Houston Medical Center and Sugar Land. Dr. Darcourt, recognizing Alice's potential as an ideal candidate, recommended her for an upcoming clinical trial, Flamingo-01. ⭐Promoting Early Cancer Detection through Mobile Mammography⭐ At Texas Oncology, we're committed to ensuring access to vital cancer screenings in our communities. Our San Antonio team partnered with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and Tyson Foods to bring mobile mammography services directly to underserved women in Seguin, TX. On May 1st, approximately 15 women, many over 50, received mammograms through our mobile event. We provided breast self-exam kits and screening resources to raise awareness. Two more mobile events are planned for July and October 2024. We're dedicated to removing barriers and promoting preventive care. Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, we're improving healthcare access and driving better outcomes in the communities we serve. #TexasOncology #BreastCancerAwareness #GetChecked
