🚀 The Slow but Steady Journey to 5G SA Despite the rapid advancements in 5G, the transition to 5G Standalone (SA) networks has been slow. By the end of 1Q24, out of 310 commercial 5G public networks, only 49 were 5G SA, a slight increase from 40 last year, with China hosting three of the largest networks. Why the Slow Migration? - Lack of Compelling Business Cases: Beyond enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and fixed wireless access (FWA), there are limited 5G use cases driving the need for SA.  - Device Readiness: There’s a scarcity of 5G SA capable devices.  - Network Architecture Issues: Existing network complexities and legacy systems pose challenges.  - CSPs’ Approach: Many communications service providers (CSPs) are maximizing their existing EPC/vEPC assets and sticking with incumbent vendors, showing no urgency to shift to SA.    Market Dynamics:  - Vendor Strategies: Casa Systems, Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Microsoft Azure for Operators have either exited the market or adopted new strategies.  - China’s Influence: Huawei and ZTE Corporation maintain global market dominance, buoyed by China.  - Single Vendor Preference: Most CSPs prefer a single vendor for smoother operations, despite the potential to pick and choose the best for each network function.     The Silver Lining:  - Pent-Up Demand: The slow migration creates a build-up of demand.  - 5G SA Core Ecosystem: Expected to pick up significantly by year-end, driven by open APIs and a broader 5G SA device ecosystem.  - Bright Spots: FWA, Ethernet over FWA, and private 5G wireless networks are promising use cases.    Market Forecast:  - 2024 Growth: The global 5G SA Core/5G Data Management/5G Policy market is expected to reach $4B by year-end, an 18% YoY growth.  - Long-Term Outlook: A significant ramp-up in CSPs' migration to 5G SA is anticipated, with the market projected to grow at a 2023-2029 CAGR of 13%. Asia Pacific will lead the market, with 5G SA core being the most crucial domain, followed by 5G Data Management. 1Q24 Shows Wireless Infrastructure Market in Correction Mode 🚨 As anticipated, the global wireless infrastructure market, encompassing all G RAN and core networks, experienced a 26% YoY decline in 1Q24. This drop is not unprecedented; similar declines occurred in 2002-2003 and the post-LTE peak era (2016-2019), signaling a market correction after three years of unsustainable 5G growth (2019-2021).
