Showcasing our commitment to sustainability and preservation of biodiversity, Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve shines as a distinguished achievement among Surface 678's award winning projects. It is a stunning testament to our commitment to safeguard natural systems and processes. Overtime, Surface has worked with the county to remove invasive, non-native species to make room for the natural environment to further flourish and spaces where people can witness the wonders of a healthy ecosystem. The preserve has become a treasured, outdoor retreat for many locals and City of Raleigh residents. Encouraging the community to get involved, the county offers enriching, seasonal outdoor education programs that are informative and fun for the whole family. We’re excited to share the recent feature in the July 2024 issue of Our State magazine, highlighting the remarkable legacy of John Chavis, the first black man in the U.S. to earn a college degree. At Surface 678, we were privileged to contribute to the John Chavis Memorial Park project, where Chavis' change-making spirit and commitment to education inspired our landscape design. Chavis established a groundbreaking school in Raleigh where he taught both black and white students, embodying his vision of education equity and equality for all. However, his efforts were tragically cut short when discriminatory laws in the early 1830s forced the closure of his school, making public teaching and preaching illegal for people of color, a cause he passionately fought for. Following the efforts of John Chavis and the park’s founding in 1937, the park continued to build a rich, cultural history including the site’s original carousel house built in 1940, the installation of the War Mothers Memorial bench in 1945, local HBCUs use the park for their athletic programs in the 1930s-1940s, the Raleigh Tigers semi-pro baseball team play at Chavis’ baseball field through 1950s-1960s, and so much more. This site served as a meaningful place for many black people during a deplorable era. Our approach to the John Chavis Memorial Park project, highlighted in Our State's "A Noble Namesake" section, underscores our dedication to cultural and historical preservation. By incorporating Chavis' inspiring story into our design, we honor his legacy and strive to inspire future generations. As the development of the Wake Tech East Campus continues, we're thrilled to announce the official ground breaking of the 4.0 Advanced Industries building! The building will be equipped with facilities for students with aspirations to pursue careers in technology, engineering, biopharmaceuticals, aircraft operations, and more. As a part of the Lord Aeck Sargent team, our scope consists of site analysis, concept design, and site plan development for stormwater opportunities, pedestrian circulation, vehicular circulation, and public transportation systems. As this site enters construction, the 4.0 building will expand upon the developing campus, further creating a sense of place and academic destination. It has been a privilege to contribute to the development of WTCC's new East Campus. We look forward to watching this campus evolve and come to life! 🎉 #surface678 #landscapearchitecture #waketech #collegecampusdesign #groundbreaking #landscapedesign

The Baucom Elementary project is officially in the homestretch! Located in Apex, this elementary school is projected to wrap up this summer, welcoming students into the new facility for the 2024-2025 school year. Working alongside our team, composed of Andre Johnson Architects, NV5, and Skanska, Surface 678 handled the exterior landscape, which consists of a series of courtyards conjoining two of the school's primary buildings. Other design elements include small structures, playgrounds, athletic fields and fitness paths, a parking lot, vehicular drive, and bus parking area. By Fall 2024, the site will include all the necessities that contribute to student learning, nourishment, and development. #landscapearchitecture #elementaryschool #campusdesign #placemaking #landscapedesign #surface678 https://lnkd.in/ejcTShx9

Did you know healthy biodiversity and carbon sequestration depend on healthy soil? At Surface 678, horticulture is a critical component in all stages of design. Healthy soil contains air pockets, allowing plants, animals, and invertebrates to move freely. Robust soil relieves topsoil of flood impacts and extreme drought, a common phenomenon resulting from climate change. Trees and plants thrive in optimal soil aeration, extending their roots significantly deeper than in compacted soil. Through photosynthesis, abundant root systems sequester CO2 long-term. "Landscape Design for Carbon Sequestration," an ASLA Honor Award-winning research study, provides a direct response epitomizing how landscape architects contribute toward climate change mitigation through natural climate solutions that sequester carbon in ecosystems. Cutting emissions is not enough to reduce warming; instead, natural system integration is the sole method to reduce emissions by up to 21% annually in the US. The restoration and preservation of soil health are crucial in our fight against climate change. As landscape architects, our goal remains to create iconic landscapes that support human culture while allowing ecological health to thrive.
