Now the third tallest building in the Chicago skyline, the design for The St. Regis Chicago asks the question: What if skyscrapers can be porous connectors, rather than barriers, for the public realm? Defining a new edge of the city, the tower tightly knits the downtown Lakeshore East community to its surroundings with unprecedented urban connections and enhanced public access to the Chicago River. Moving rhythmically in and out of plane, the overall flowing appearance of the building is the result of an alternating geometry between these three volumes. An innovative structural system allows the central volume to be lifted from the ground plane, creating a new essential pedestrian connection between the Chicago Riverwalk and the nearby community park’s outdoor recreational facilities. We had a great time hosting AIA Chicago’s LGBTQIA+ Alliance Pride Social on our Chicago rooftop last week! We gathered with local design professionals for a beautiful evening of music, dancing, and community, putting a spotlight on the importance of queer representation and identity in the architecture industry. Proceeds from the event benefit TaskForce Chicago (Taskforce Prevention and Community Services), which serves LGBTQIA+ youth on Chicago’s West Side. Last month we celebrated Jeanne Gang's promotion to Officer of the Legion of Honor! This distinction, the most important in France, has been awarded to the most deserving individuals in all fields of activity for two centuries. Since first being awarded the rank of Knight in 2015, Jeanne and the Studio’s presence in France has only deepened, with the establishment of our Paris office in 2017, and the upcoming opening of our first built work in Paris, the University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center in Paris. An induction ceremony at Cité Falguière’s Atelier 11 was led by Gaëtan Bruel, Chief of Staff to France’s Minister of Culture, who noted, “you have forged a special bond with France, and through your talent, through your commitments, you have come to occupy a special place in the heart of our country.” Le mois dernier à Paris, nous avons célébré la promotion de Jeanne au rang d'Officier de la Légion d'Honneur! Cette distinction, la plus importante en France, récompense depuis deux siècles les personnes les plus méritantes dans tous les domaines d'activité. Over the weekend we broke ground on the Marlboro Agricultural Education Center (MAEC), a new hub for multigenerational education, job training, and community leadership in nutrition and urban agriculture! The new building, located in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood, brings diverse, community-orientated programs to the western edge of Marlboro Houses. Guided by the mission of its nonprofit operator, The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH), the Center builds on long running efforts across the city to strengthen food autonomy and security in underserved neighborhoods. Inside, the greenhouse on the upper level will use a combination of hydroponics and aquaponics to grow nutritious leafy greens that will be distributed to neighbors, used in the teaching kitchen, and eventually sold at local farmers markets. Outside, the design strengthens connections with the surrounding neighborhood and campus through generous sidewalk frontage and large windows that reveal the activities within. A central, accessible entrance and public terrace with plantings and seating invites people to explore the building. Congratulations to all of our partners! Biophilia: Nature Reimagined is now open at the Denver Art Museum! Curated by Darrin Alfred, this exhibition explores the work of architects, artists, and designers who are reanimating humans’ intrinsic bond with the natural world. Our new Populus hotel in downtown Denver is among the 80+ works on display. Set to open later this year, the 13-story building takes cues from Colorado’s aspen trees to connect hotel guests with the local community and ecology. Our Shop team created a spectacular 6-foot-tall model of Populus for the show! Built at ½-inch scale out of solid wood, it gives a “dollhouse” view into the public spaces and guest rooms located in the hotel’s southeast corner.
