Chief Hearing Health Officer at Starkey Hearing Technologies. We are hiring exceptional people to join us in reinventing the hearing aid and redefining hearing loss!
Thank you to Heather Brown, A.J. Hilton and WCCO | CBS News Minnesota for the discussion this morning regarding hearing protection. The 4th of July, more than any other holiday, is associated with loud noises, like fireworks, and those can be extremely damaging to hearing. All it takes is a single blast or explosion to cause immediate and irreversible hearing damage. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 10,000 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries in the emergency room. Although frequently an afterthought, nearly one-quarter of those visits were related to trauma to the head, face or ears, including acoustic trauma. The biggest culprit is proximity to loud sounds. Adults - and especially children- should enjoy the fun, but at a safe distance, whether watching a public display or in their home/neighborhood. Another key? Wearing hearing protection! Along with sunglasses, bug spray and sunscreen, don’t forget to pack hearing protection, whether your going to a ballgame, watching a concert, or observing fireworks. Also, regardless of whether you are using earplugs or a more customized solution, make sure they fit! This is particularly important for those with small ears, or for parents of small children. I love seeing parents take their children to concerts or firework displays, but wince when I see earplugs that are poorly sized or improperly inserted. Have questions? Seek the assistance of an audiologist or hearing instrument specialist. If you are FREQUENTLY in noisy environments, consider using a customized solution. For more information, see Starkey Hearing , www.starkey.com, SoundGear or Www.soundgear.com. If your ears ring or feel “full” after watching fireworks, consider giving them a rest the following day. Avoid mowing the lawn, riding your motorcycle, going to concerts, or other loud environments to give your hearing a chance to recover. If the difficulty persists, sell the help of a hearing care professional! Thanks again for helping to raise awareness for the importance of hearing protection! #HearBetterLiveBetter #ListenCarefully #protectYourHearing
