We hosted more than 50 athlete leaders and their Unified partners at our annual Leadership University. Athletes were able to choose from three majors and several elective offerings at the weekend-long event at Bethel University. This past weekend I was fortunate to attend Leadership University with Special Olympics Minnesota; being the sidekick to two SOMN athletes, Rob & Chris! For me, this year's course, Career Development; taught by Betty DeWitt! She brought the funk into gearing up athletes for a job/job skills! I was happy to put in such a fun class with amazing athletes and their partners! It truly makes the experience so much more fun! Some key takeaways from the course were: 1) You are the CEO of your own life! 2) A goal without a plan is just a wish. 3) Establish your own value and mission statement! Another session that I partook in was, Navigating Public Transportation presented by staff with the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority speaking about the importance of bussing in the metro as well as how to plan a trip via the Google Maps Platform. Overall, such a fun weekend hosted at Bethel University! Can not until the next Leadership University! #somn #specialolympicsmn #athleteleadership #careerdevelopment

The Plane Pull for Special Olympics Minnesota is exactly what it sounds like! 💪✈️ On Saturday, September 7, teams of up to eight people will compete to see who can pull a 23-ton jet down the MSP runway the fastest. Teams will fundraise for the event (100% of the proceeds support the athletes of Special Olympics Minnesota!) and then they'll get three chances to pull the plane. Meet Troy Miller, Special Olympics Minnesota's amazing Merchandise Coordinator! Troy joined the team in January 2024 and has since transformed our merchandise processes. As SOMN's sole merchandise coordinator, Troy is in charge of tracking and managing inventory and running merch booths at events and competitions. Troy's favorite part of his job? "For me, it's all about the people. The SOMN staff is warm and welcoming, our volunteers are enthusiastic and eager to help, and our community of athletes, coaches and fans have already proven to be incredibly inspiring even in my short time here." ❤️ When he's not working, Troy can almost always be found writing screenplays, watching football or making music!
