What is Long COVID? In 2020, as the world battled the pandemic, a new struggle emerged: the lingering effects of COVID-19, known as “long COVID.” Despite the progress made, many continue to grapple with prolonged health challenges long after their initial infection. Washington University has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to address long COVID, and IHN has joined forces with them and other community organizations to better serve medically vulnerable and underserved populations in the St. Louis region and rural Missouri. This grant will enable us to develop effective solutions and expand access to critical resources for those who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. As we observe Juneteenth, let's reflect on its profound significance in today's ongoing journey towards equity. Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the pivotal moment when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved individuals, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Designated a federal holiday on June 17th, 2021, Juneteenth stands as the oldest African American celebration, reminding us of the enduring struggles and resilience of Black Americans. However, our recognition of Juneteenth should also serve as a reminder that the fight for true equality is far from over. We must acknowledge the disparities that persist and recommit ourselves to advocating for a future where every individual, especially Black Americans, can thrive without barriers. This Juneteenth, let us renew our dedication to dismantling systemic injustices and creating a society where equity and justice prevail for all.
