Spark (YC W24) uses AI to simplify utility-scale clean energy development, making data on grid interconnection and permits accessible. Electricity demand could more than double by 2050 to reach net zero, with almost $1T being invested in renewable energy every year. Utility-scale clean energy projects are key to transforming our energy grid, yet the necessary data and requirements on interconnection, permitting, and policies are scattered and complex — making it a cumbersome experience for developers. Currently, planning these projects requires exhaustive desk research, reliance on external consultants, and third-party reports, all of which are significant in both time and cost. Spark uses AI to empower large-scale solar energy developers to understand the utility, permitting, and policy requirements for every potential project. Developers can now efficiently sift through thousands of PDFs, maps, and websites, identifying essential requirements and evaluating potential sites in seconds instead of weeks. Today, they're trusted by award-winning solar and battery developers with nearly 1 GW of projects across the US. Before founding Spark, Julia Wu and Tae Hoon Kim built search, payments, and systems at companies like Brex, Tesla, and Apple.
