Sleep is your Superpower

About us

Somnee is developed by StimScience. We are focused on commercializing our breakthrough neuroscience and sleep research into life-changing products and services for individuals, employers, clinicians, and health plans. The Somnee team has spent decades pioneering sleep research, non-invasive brain measurement, and personalized neurostimulation applications. Our team includes world-renowned scientists and founding researchers, Dr. Matthew Walker, Ph.D., Dr. Rich Ivry, Ph.D., Dr. Robert Knight, M.D., Dr. Ram Gurumoorthy, and former employees from Fitbit, Google, and Samsung wearables. With initial funding from Khosla Ventures, we are building a world-class team to launch Somnee, our pioneering diagnostic and therapeutic products that help people fall asleep faster and with longer, higher-quality restorative sleep. As our founding Chief Science Advisor, Dr Matthew Walker wrote in his bestselling book, "Why We Sleep", “Sleep is the most important thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Sleep health is central to mental health, long-term memory, learning, and physical fitness. Despite its importance, one in three adults gets an unhealthy amount of sleep, and 51% of people are dissatisfied with their sleep. Sleep is one of the most critical functions of the brain, and our deep understanding of the neuroscience of sleep uniquely positions us to help solve the sleep health epidemic.

Transcranial electrical stimulation techniques like tACS have been used safely for decades by the world’s top neuroscientists for everything from memory improvement to cognitive health conditions, anxiety relief, enhanced sleep, and more. 😴💤 At Somnee, we took tACS one step further, developing a patented approach to closed-loop neurostimulation that is personalized to your unique brainwaves. (Somnee is the only product available that offers personalized tACS —  Other tACS devices only provide one-size-fits-all stimulation.) ➡️ Swipe for a quick breakdown of the key differences between fixed and personalized neurostimulation (and to learn which is better at improving your sleep!) #innovation #technology #neuroscience

CEO at Somnee | Sleep is your Superpower! x Fitbit, Electronic Arts, 2K Sports, ESPN | Board Member | Advisor + Investor

Last week, I spoke at the Fortune #BrainstormTech CEO Summit in Park City. It was fun sitting down with Fortune editor Leo Schwartz to discuss wearables and share what we're doing at Somnee to solve the global sleep epidemic. They hosted an impressive lineup of executives and thought leaders from Airbnb, Robinhood, Agility RoboticsLucid MotorsColossal Biosciences, Brex, Sequoia Capital, Upfront Ventures, Runway, Norwest Venture Partners, CapitalG, and Forerunner, among many others. It was loaded with insightful sessions, some fun laughs, "AI-everything", hyper-real nature, and absolutely incredible early AM/PM networking activities. A couple of us enjoyed a private water fly fishing experience with former SVB executive and Founders Circle Capital legend Ken Loveless. It was a good balance of learning + fun. 🙌 🙌 to Andrew Nusca, Maryam Banikarim 🗽🚕 ❤️, and the production team at Fortune.

According to research published in Gallup & Casper’s “The State of Sleep in America” 2022 Report — workers who get poor sleep miss ≈2.29 days of work every month. Specifically, the report highlights the link between poor sleep, increased health issues, and unplanned employee absenteeism. 🤒 On the other hand, the report found employees who get consistently high-quality sleep only miss ≈0.91 days on average. With ≈6.2% of the US workforce getting chronically poor sleep, the cost of this unplanned absenteeism is far from negligible. In fact, the report suggests it contributes to roughly $44.6 billion loss for the U.S. economy every year. Long story short — If you care about getting the best out of your teams and employees, supporting high-quality, restorative sleep is a must. 💫 Curious to learn more about Gallup’s findings, and how Somnee could help uplevel your team’s performance? 😴💤 Have you ever had a hot bath and started falling asleep before you could make it to bed? If you have — you’ve experienced what researchers have dubbed “The Warm Bath Effect.” According to Somnee’s Dr. Matthew Walker, UC Berkeley Professor of Neuroscience and author of the NYT Bestseller, “Why We Sleep,” a hot bath is a highly effective way of promoting deeper, quicker sleep. ➡️ Swipe to learn why.

Researchers used to believe that slow wave, deep sleep was most critical for health… But according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, new data suggests that all sleep stages play key roles in our daily and long-term well-being. For instance, the lighter sleep of stage 1 and 2 Non-REM sleep has now been linked with learning and memory formation.🧠 😴💤 This makes getting 7-8 quality hours of nightly sleep all the more essential to ensure your brain can cycle through the 4-6 sleep cycles it needs to help you maintain peak performance. ➡️ How much sleep do you average a night?

Your daily schedule may change, but your internal clock doesn’t. ⏰ If you’re having trouble sleeping, one of the best things you can do is get consistent in your sleep/wake schedule. Here’s why. Falling sleep isn’t like flipping a switch. It involves a wide range of biological processes that work together to promote sleep. When you consistently go to bed at the same time, it helps your brain become more efficient at triggering the sleep-promoting hormones and biological activity necessary for quick, easy sleep. 😴💤 Waking up at the same time is just as important, as it starts the countdown to bed and manages your daily energy til then. ⇨ On a scale of 1-10, how consistent are you in your bedtime / morning wake-up schedule? #sleeptips #sleepeducation #personaldevelopment

Running on 5-6 hours of sleep won’t work forever… Research has found sleep deprivation can lead to similar impairments as being legally drunk. Including: ✗ Reduced focus ✗ Worse decision-making ✗ Less resilience to stress ✗ Impaired problem solving ✗ Heightened irritability and mood swings ✗ Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes So instead of thinking as sleep as “that thing you never get enough of” — trust decades of research that say it’s your best asset to fuel more productive, energized, and enjoyable days. Make 7-8 hours of nightly sleep your new norm, with Somnee.  Learn more at SomneeSleep.com #neuroscience #burnout #productivity
