The software used to fly the drone has been made available free and open source (link in comments) so others can recreate and improve on our demonstration. We believe Christian’s closing statement best summarizes the opportunities of this technology: “Despite my disability, I'm a very happy and fulfilled person. What truly hurts holds me back, are not my physical limitations, it's rather the barriers in the environment. I'm a technologist and political activist. I believe that technology can empower disabled people. It can help create a better, more inclusive and accessible world for everyone. This demonstration is a perfect example. We saw what's possible when cutting edge technology is combined with human curiosity and creativity. So let's build tools that empower people, applications that break down barriers, systems that unlock a world of possibilities. I think that's an idea worth spreading.” And fellow TED2023 speaker Nita Farahany's talk on cognitive liberty immediately before ours lays out the profound risks and importance of getting this technology right. OpenBCI’s mission is to lower the barrier to entry for brain-computer interfacing, while ensuring that these technologies are adopted into the consumer landscape in an ethical way that protects user agency and mental health. 🎮 Playing video games with only the mind? 🧠 Twitch streamer Perri Karyal (username Perrikaryal) is breaking mind-body barriers by playing video games using only her brain. Using an EEG device to translate her brain activity into game commands, Perri has mastered titles like Elden Ring and Minecraft without traditional controllers. “The mind-control training — figuring out which visualizations would work — that took me the longest, and you only really find out that they don’t work once you’re 700 trials in. Then you have to start again, which is painful,” Perri said. Her journey showcases the potential for technology to create more accessible gaming experiences. The science shows that, with as little as a 𝟬.𝟲% decrease in body mass, changes in cardiovascular and autonomic functioning (heart rate variability) negatively influence #mood. Even minor dehydration can have major effects on how you think and feel 🤔 Staying hydrated is one of the simplest, most effective ways to support: 🧠 healthy cognitive function 🧠 memory and mood 🧠 attention and mental performance About 80% of the brain's mass is water. 💡 A groundbreaking study published in Nature Magazine suggests that depression and anxiety are brain circuit function disorders. 🔎 The researchers classified six distinct biotype profiles for humans diagnosed with anxiety or depression disorders, indicating there are multiple specific neural pathways that can cause depression and anxiety within humans. These discoveries are important within a clinical context, as they can help predict how mental health patients will react to different treatments based on their biotype. 💡 Professor Fabio Zambetta at RMIT University won a best paper award at CHI 2024 for their work using an OpenBCI Ultracortex and Cyton board.
