SOLVE brings Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a legacy of stewardship.
About us
SOLVE is a statewide, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to bring Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a legacy of stewardship. We are dedicated to developing relationships among different groups, individuals, and businesses in pursuit of a common goal: to protect and preserve the places that make up our uniquely beautiful home. SOLVE mobilizes one of Oregon’s largest volunteer networks to clean up our beaches, parks, neighborhoods, and other natural spaces through litter cleanups, invasive plant removal, planting native trees and shrubs, and other environmental projects. We annually support nearly 30,000 volunteers in 900 projects throughout the state. Originally called S.O.L.V. (Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism), SOLVE was founded by Governor Tom McCall and other community leaders in 1969 to address the need for community action in our ever-growing state.

🌎 The #OregonSpringCleanup2024, in partnership with Portland General Electric, wrapped up with remarkable achievements on Earth Day yesterday! From April 13th to 22nd, more than 4,000 volunteers from Oregon and SW Washington collected 21,981 pounds of litter and marine debris and removed 21,900 square feet of invasive plant species. This success is only possible because of the community effort of all the families, neighborhood groups, partners, and environmental enthusiasts who came together to celebrate Earth Day through meaningful action. Projects ranged from neighborhood litter pickups, beach cleanups to habitat restoration events. An unforgettable moment was the Eco Disco, a collaboration with Heartbeat Silent Disco, where volunteers transformed Buckman into a silent dance party with wireless headphones after cleaning up the neighborhood. Special thanks to our event sponsors Portland General Electric, AAA Oregon/Idaho, Clean Water Services, DeMarini Sports Inc., Fred Meyer, Holman, KOIN, Metro, Oregon Parks And Recreation Department, PepsiCo, Swire Coca-Cola, USA, The Oregonian / OregonLive.com, The Standard, TriMet, and Wells Fargo. #OregonSpringCleanUp #EarthDay #EarthMonth #SOLVEthisTogether

Before the snow, ice, and slush descended on Portland, SOLVE was so honored to throw a party for our wonderful volunteers! We hosted it in the beautiful Community Room at NW Natural and the food, drinks, music and vibes were all top notch! Our efforvescent board member, Nina Deconcini, was a fantastic master of ceremonies and spoke so eloquently about the importance of our volunteers and their continuing legacy at SOLVE. We were also able to recognize the work of our Volunteer of the Year, Rachal Royce, who attended over 100 events in the last year and fully lives up to the meaning of stewardship. Games, prizes, quizzes, good conversation, and new and old connections were aplenty. Can’t wait for next year’s party! Here are some photos from the night (about half by me and half by my amazing colleague Stefanie Wich-Herrlein):
