Our longtime partner and recent U.S. Department of Labor Iqbal Masih Award winner 👏 Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe from the General Agricultural Workers’ Union of Ghana (GAWU) dedicates his life to ending child labor in the cocoa fields of Africa. By organizing unions and formalizing work, Tagoe and GAWU are creating child free labor zones, "where the union is present, child labor is absent.” Join us in congratulating Tagoe for this award by leaving a comment below! Promoting Worker Rights Worldwide
About us
Our Vision At the Solidarity Center, we believe that all people who work should receive the rewards of their work—decent paychecks and benefits, safe jobs, respect and fair treatment. We believe that economic and social injustice around the world are neither intractable problems nor acceptable byproducts of a global economy where some can win at the expense of many. Rather, we believe working women and men can collectively improve their wages and workplaces, call on their governments to uphold laws and protect human rights, and be a force for democracy, shared prosperity and inclusive economic development. We joined the AFL-CIO and leaders from our partners the Nigerian Labor Congress, International Trade Union Confederation-Africa and the Congress of South African Trade Unions in Washington D.C. this week for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (#AGOA) Forum. In advance of the official Forum, we participated in two events where our partners shared their recommendations on how AGOA can provide economic growth that benefits working people and their communities in anticipation of the trade agreement renewal next year. More than 500 Philippine workers and trade unionists, including many of our union partners, marched in Quezon City this week. Their message was clear: President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. must declare support for a higher minimum wage. Watch the video then click here to learn more: https://bit.ly/3SqHC4u #WorkerRights #Solidarity

More than two million Brazilians’ primary income comes from app-based work–food and goods delivery, passenger transport and other types of delivery services. At the #G20 in Brazil this week, we facilitated a conversation between our partners CUT Brazil and U.S. Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee and Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su during which union leaders provided an update on efforts to organize and mobilize workers in the platform sector. #WorkerRights #PlatformWorkers #Solidarity

The International Lawyers Assisting Workers Network (ILAW Network), a project of the Solidarity Center, and Derechos Digitales held a two-day event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last week, bringing together workers, union leaders, labor lawyers and digital policy experts from nine countries in Latin America to discuss the challenges and opportunities within the region to advocate for the rights of workers impacted by technology. #Solidarity #WorkerRights

Workers and unions in the Philippines face... 🔴 red tagging 🔴 violence 🔴 abductions 🔴 arbitrary arrests The government continues to foster a climate of fear and persecution, but workers persist. Unions are mobilizing around issues like wages, benefits and health and safety protections on the job. As they organize, we will continue to work with our union partners to provide capacity-building training and legal assistance, and engage with policymakers to support workers across sectors. Across the world, workers face increasing rates of violence, abductions, imprisonment and sometimes even death simply for exercising their rights. We can all agree these stats are startling, right? This is why we work one-on-one with workers and support their unions and associations with the training, legal support and other resources needed to build a global network of worker rights and democracy defenders. Today, thousands of working people in Peru exercised their right to strike ✊. Some of our union partners, many of which are our domestic worker sisters, took to the streets in response to the ongoing, repressive actions by the government that violate their fundamental rights and put the country’s democracy at risk. Every worker has the right to make their workplaces better through collective action and forming unions. We partner directly with workers and unions to provide training, research, legal support and other resources as they build effective trade unions & strong communities around the world. #Solidarity #WorkerRights

👏 Congrats to our partner in Ghana, Deputy General Secretary Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe of The General Agricultural Workers' Union, for being awarded the U.S. Department of Labor 2024 Iqbal Masih Award! By organizing and formalizing the agricultural economy in rural areas and working with communities to eliminate child labor, Tagoe’s tireless advocacy is a powerful force in ending child labor in Ghana. From moving thousands from child labor into schools to creating a network of anti-child labor champions, Tageo honors Iqbal Masih's spirit & inspires us all to continue the fight to #EndChildLabor everywhere. https://bit.ly/4cIwc4h
