The SOCCCD comprises of Saddleback College, opened in 1968, Irvine Valley College, started in 1979, and their newest campus, the Advanced Technology & Education Park (ATEP) that was inaugurated in 2007. The district serves 50,000+ students each semester, including international students from more than 70 countries! Julianna's visionary leadership, commitment to equity, and strategic focus have not only shaped the educational landscape, but have had profound economic and societal impacts, underscoring her role as a transformative force. As #chancellor, she is the #CEO of the district and supervises the college presidents, vice chancellors, and other District Services administrators and managers. Prior to taking the leadership of SOCCCD, Dr. Barnes was the president of Cuyamaca College in San Diego, California, a position she has held from October 2015. With an educational career spanning nearly three decades, Julianna is known for her inclusive leadership and deep commitment to student success and equity. Today, I was honored to participate with Dr. Annebelle Nery, President of Santa Ana College, in a summit, focused on leadership, nonprofit organizations and education.  Excellent discussion that featured honest conversations about remote work, access to capital, management and the future of education. Many thanks to David Elliott and Shawn Wehan for spearheading this event! These three pillars have been part of my life for nearly 35 years. Yes, 35 years. As some of you know, I serve as President of the Board of Trustees for the South Orange County Community College District, which represents two exceptional institutions of higher education, Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College.  I sought to become a Trustee on the South Orange County Community College District Board because I believe in the power of education to change lives, break down barriers, give students a second chance and create opportunities for success. The positive results at these two amazing colleges confirm this belief.  I was 23 when I first led as President a nonprofit organization focused on education -  the Michigan State University Alumni Association of Washington, D.C. I was so proud that we started a scholarship program during my tenure for students in need to attend my alma mater.  Over the years I have led or advised dozens of nonprofit organizations nationally, internationally and regionally, including NAIOP SoCal and GlobalARM USA. The power of nonprofit organizations is immense. The impact of joining something greater than yourself has both professional and personal benefits. Many of you know this and are already engaged in a range of nonprofit and community organizations I would be happy to speak with anyone about engaging further in the community and becoming part of a nonprofit or community organization you are passionate about. I am confident it will enrich your life and make you a better professional, entrepreneur and leader.
