🎇 Wishing you a safe and fun 4th of July! Last month, SLAC held its annual employee summer BBQ to kick off the festivities early. In addition to enjoying delicious food, attendees played beach volleyball, bocce ball, and soccer under the midsummer sun.

☄️ This #WorldAsteroidDay, we’re throwing it back to our “Mapping the Universe” episode with Rubin Observatory 🏳️🌈🌈 Deputy Director Aaron Roodman. Listen to Aaron talk about the #LSST camera and the cosmic entities (asteroids included, ofc) that the camera will help scientists track. For more: https://lnkd.in/gsQnQCUU

📸 It’s #NationalCameraDay so of course we have to celebrate building (and shipping) the world’s largest digital camera ever built. Swipe to see the framed Guinness World Records certificate that hangs at SLAC! Rubin Observatory 🏳️🌈🌈

✨ Happy tau day, dedicated to the mathematical constant tau! Here at SLAC, we like to celebrate a different flavor of tau: Tau be or not tau be? That was SLAC physicist Martin Perl’s question. In 1975, he discovered the tau lepton, a heavier cousin of the electron, using the Stanford Positron-Electron Asymmetric Rings (SPEAR) collider. This discovery, which earned Perl the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics, paved the way for the identification of two more quarks and a neutrino, completing the third generation of subatomic particles. Dive into the fascinating world of subatomic particles with us with this video about SLAC’s early history! #tauDay #Physics #ParticlePhysics #SLAC #ScientificDiscovery

🏳️🌈 On June 4, SLAC and its LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG) raised the Progress Pride Flag to celebrate the start of #PrideMonth. The LGBTQ+ ERG also organized a lab-wide march and curated a podcast playlist to foster a greater sense of inclusion and belonging. Did you know: The original Rainbow Flag was created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 in San Francisco, inspired by his friend Harvey Milk. https://bit.ly/3XGtQho

Check out this write-up on two of SLAC's former GEM fellows!
Priscilla and Damion spent last summer as GEM interns at the Department of Energy’s (@energy) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (@slac_lab), where Priscilla studied the properties of perovskites, which have shown promise in solar energy applications, while Damion studied anomalies in dark matter detectors. Priscilla is now an engineer in sustainable energy, and Damion is completing a M.S. in Physics at North Carolina A&T State University. Priscilla, a 2X NASA intern, stated: “I felt empowered to look inward and value my own contributions.” For Damion the GEM Internship gave him a place where he “could show up as my authentic self.” Read more about their empowering experience at https://lnkd.in/gtQjhC66 #utep #hsi #hbcu #ncatsuaggies #nasa #energy #slaclab #stemscholarship #stemfellowship #summerinternship #advancingscientificimpact #westillseescientificimpact #GEM #HiddenGEMs #alchemist #stemgems
